The Assistant Principal assists the Principal in the performance of the various leadership responsibilities which are attendant to the successful administration of the school. The specific duties are assigned by the Principal.
Salary Schedule
Berkeley County Schools Teacher Pay Scale based upon degree level and years of experience plus appropriate school assistant principal index.
Specialized Skills
Masters Degree West Virginia administrative certificate three years successful teaching experience.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
POSITION: Assistant Principal
LOCATION: Assigned School
DIVISION: Administration and Support Services
RESPONSIBILITY: Assist the principal to fulfill his/her responsibilities for
effective administration and organization of the school.
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Principal
I. An assistant principal maintains positive work habits by:
a) Adhering to appropriate safety hygiene and health standards and maintaining
safety of work area.
b) Adhering to schedules; being punctual.
c) Demonstrating flexibility and adjusting to change.
d) Adhering to and implementing new responsibilities and assignments.
e) Working cooperatively with the educational team as well as demonstrating
courtesy and tact in interpersonal relations.
f) Using good judgment and making sound decisions.
g) Adhering to all school county and state policies and procedures.
h) Demonstrating dependability.
i) Understanding and implementing the job description.
j) Performing additional reasonable job-related responsibilities assigned by the
immediate supervisor.
II. An assistant principal performs duties efficiently and productively by:
a) Assuming full charge of the school in the absence of the principal subject to the
same definitions and limitations of responsibility and authority as the principal.
b) Assisting in the supervision distribution and inventory of textbooks and
instructional supplies.
c) Assisting in the preparation of reports.
d) Assisting in coordinating ancillary services necessary for the operation of the
school. These services include but are not limited to transportation support
services pupil services health and social services federal programs and special
education.
e) Assisting the staff with student relations personnel development community
relations student discipline attendance and the instructional program.
f) Assisting in the review selection and recommendation of equipment and
instructional supplies.
g) Assisting in conducting needs assessments and making recommendations for
curricular offerings and program innovations.
h) Assisting in the scheduling of extra-curricular activities scheduling classes and
the preparation of student schedules.
i) Assisting in maintaining discipline and designing alternative methods of discipline for both instructional and ancillary staff.
j) Assisting in providing for teacher accountability systems which might include
reviewing lesson plan books monitoring grades documenting student progress
and reviewing homeroom registers etc.
k) Assisting in enrollment orientation and placement of students.
l) Assisting in coordinating a county activity calendar and supervising county
contests and competitions.
m) Assisting in coordinating the state testing program and college entrance
placement activities.
n) Assisting in supervising school-sponsored activities involving students which
occur during out-of-school days.
o) Assisting in providing a system of monitoring and documenting student progress
and other statistics i.e. attendance drop-out information etc.
p) Assisting in the supervision of instruction and evaluation and implementation
of the schools instructional program.
q) Assisting in the planning and presentation of staff development programs and
regularly scheduled faculty and instructional meetings.
r) Assisting in arranging for substitute teachers and provide appropriate orientation
and evaluation of their performance.
III. An assistant principal maintains or upgrades skills by:
a) Working toward self-improvement.
b) Reacting favorably to constructive criticism.
c) Attending inservice training and available workshops.
