LEAD WRITING CENTER COORDINATOR

Salary Range: $5540 - $7893/Monthly(Anticipated hiring salary range $5540/monthly)

Work Schedule: Full-Time Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.;temporary appointment ends on/or before one year from date of hire; exempt classification.

Essential Functions: The Lead Writing Center Coordinator for the Writing Wing of the Center for Academic Success (CAS) will play a lead role on a team that provides a range of comprehensive academic services in writing support. Responsibilities include developing plans for writing tutoring that support Cal State LAs and Academic Affairs strategic plans and graduation initiatives. Under the general supervision of the Interim Director of CASLearning Services and based upon best practices research on writing and student success the Lead Coordinator will develop and implement activities that support student writers especially those in writing intensive courses. The Lead Coordinator will provide direction and support for other CAS Student Services Professionals staff tutors and student assistants; coordinate the recruitment training and evaluation of writing tutors; develop professional development opportunities for writing tutors; and collaborate with other student academic support services to provide academic units and special programs with information guidance and services that support and facilitate student success and graduation. The Lead Coordinator will provide data and qualitative and quantitative reports to the Interim Director of CASLearning Services on a monthly basis as well as provide input and recommendations for continuous improvement. The incumbent will meet frequently with students helping them to analyze and think through problems and will be able to have successful conversations with students and help them understand appropriate policies and procedures. The incumbent will assess the success of the writing center and its impact on students as well as gather analyze and report on relevant data.

Required Qualifications & Experience:Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field and the equivalent of four years of progressively responsible professional student related counseling or students services work experience. The candidate must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate by phone email and in group settings. The candidate must possess the ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations analyze and define the problem draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Must be able to plan organize and prioritize work; develop maintain and analyze database systems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and exercise good judgment. Must be able to multi-task complete assignments in a timely fashion and work under pressure. Possess excellent writing and reading skills. Demonstrate ability to work effectively and cooperatively with students staff faculty and a wide range of areas across the University. Proficient in the use of technology as it is related to the essential functions of this position. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborating with the Director of CAS develop strategies to improve graduation rates student retention and eliminate equity gaps by assisting with administrative planning to develop creative solutions related to CAS service and delivery. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who may apply for the position.

California State University Los Angeles as part of the CSU system is a State of California Employer. Desired Qualifications: Previous experience working on a college campus and in the program area to which assigned; experience as a writing teacher and/or tutor; and in teaching and/or promoting or supporting student retention and with GET/PeopleSoft or other university operating of teaching and learning and best practices in writing centers; and of general university policies and effective project management work involves significant independent problem-solving skills to resolve complex situations often during periods of change and ability to work with high achieving students as well as students who need developmental coursework. Higher-level thinking and a nuanced ability to predict writing tutoring needs are essential qualities.
