Job Description

Grow Your Impact: Earn VI or DHH Certification Through New JP Schools-Utah Partnership

Jefferson Parish Schools is excited to launch a new partnership with the University of Utah to address immediate teacher shortages in the fields of Visual Impairment (VI) and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) education.

We are seeking currently certified Special Education teachers and Early Interventionists who are ready to expand their impact and help ensure all students receive the specialized support they deserve.

There is a growing shortage of educators qualified to serve students who are visually impaired or deaf or hard-of-hearing. These students have unique learning needs and this program is designed to equip dedicated educators with the tools and certification necessary to support them this selective program we will support:

  • 5 candidates for the VI cohort

  • 5 candidates for the DHH cohort
    (Two spots in each cohort are reserved for Early Childhood educators)

Program Overview:

  • Start Date:August 2025 (Coursework begins while participants remain in current roles for the 202526 school year)
  • Certification Completion:Summer 2026
  • Begin VI/DHH Teaching Roles:Fall 2026
  • Course Format:Online learning through the University of Utah including both live and self-paced sessions
  • Ongoing Support:Monthly or bi-monthly cohort sessions and professional development beginning in Fall 2026
  • Certification Outcome:Full state certification in Visual Impairment or Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing education

Position Description:

The Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired is responsible for assessing visually impaired students providing instruction to visually impaired students and consulting with VI students teachers in order to maximize the educational services and learning potential of visually impaired students.

Reports To:

Director of IDEA

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Ability to travel to multiple JP sites daily.
  • Facilitates services and interprets needs of the visually impaired students.
  • Provides in-service training to all school personnel ensuring that the visually impaired student receives the appropriate supports and services.
  • Obtains special textbooks and materials suitable for the visually impaired student.
  • Maintains regular contact with the general classroom teacher to prepare reading materials in proper medium for the visually impaired student.
  • Provides direct services to visually impaired students.
  • Maintains reciprocal communication with the Louisiana Department of Education.

Instructional Components

  • Fulfill duties traditionally expected of those in teaching profession

  • Grade papers tests and other student work
  • Take and record attendance
  • Maintain grade books; record student grades participation etc.
  • Maintain positive and timely interaction with parents/guardians relative to the performance or conduct of students assigned to the teacher as well as other school related obligations
  • Assist with Brailling materials for students with Visual Impairments within JP Schools
  • Establish and maintain communication with the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in order to obtain high quality instructional materials/supplies
  • Provide instructional class coverage during teacher absences and/or vacancies subject to the School Board policy on additional compensation for teachers as subs.

Supervision

  • Supervision of students when students are on or off campus at a school related or sponsored event
  • Supervision of students prior to school and/or drop-off
  • Supervision of students in the classroom and in the school
  • Supervision of students between classes during recess or other breaks during lunch or assemblies
  • Supervision of students after school and/or pick-up

Non-instructional and Other Components

  • Submit a schedule weekly outlining the students being served planning time and any other duties required by the position.
  • Complete progress reports in ESER at the end of each quarter
  • Write/conduct Bulletin 1706 compliant IEPs rooted in data
  • Maintain service logs for each student serviced
  • Attend meetings generally associated with the instruction of students
  • Attend faculty staff and department meetings
  • Attend professional development or training sessions
  • Attend IEP MDR and A/BIT meetings
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences or other parent events
  • Attend back-to-school open house and other eventsAttend graduation
  • Attend PGP PIP Evaluation Observation IAP and student discipline meetings or hearings
  • Attend school board committee regular board meetings or special board meetings upon request

Extracurricular Activities

    • Attend or work at athletic or other school events during the year
    • Attend all meetings and functions of those activities clubs or groups of which the employee is a sponsor
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of IDEA.

    Skills and Qualifications:

    We seek detail-oriented independent self-starters who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to raising student achievement and who have a record of high performance in challenging situations. Successful candidates will also demonstrate and/or possess:

    • Bachelors degree and visually impaired certification required.
    • 3 years of experience in elementary secondary and/or special education.
    • Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture-creator that can inspire and motivate.
    • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
    • High degree of professionalism with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
    • In depth-knowledge of assistive technology specifically designed for the visually impaired to train students and teachers.
    • Ability to provide Braille instruction.
    • Familiarity with orientation and mobility training (preferred).

    Desirable Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree.

    Physical Involvement:

    Sitting is required part of each workday. Must be able to operate office equipment. Standing walking reaching bending lifting up to 10 pounds is sometimes required. Ability to provide own transportation to schools work locations and meeting sites. Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.
