Job Description

Location: Roanoke Virginia (District-wide oversight with a primary base at the RCPS central office or designated school)

Job Type: Full-time 10-month position (with potential for occasional evening/weekend duties and summer work)

Reports To: Nurse Manger

Job Summary:

The School Nurse Team Lead is an experienced and licensed Registered Nurse who provides clinical leadership supervision and coordination for the school nursing staff across Roanoke City Public Schools. This role is crucial in ensuring the delivery of high-quality comprehensive health services to all students fostering a healthy school environment and serving as a key liaison between school administration nursing staff and community health partners. The Team Lead will be instrumental in developing implementing and evaluating district-wide health policies and procedures and in supporting the professional growth of the nursing team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Leadership & Supervision:
    • Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to school nurses ensuring adherence to nursing standards of practice school board policies and state regulations.
    • Conduct regular reviews of nursing documentation health plans (IHPs ECPs) and medication administration protocols to ensure accuracy and compliance.
    • Serve as a clinical resource and expert for complex student health issues providing guidance and support to school nurses in developing appropriate care plans and interventions.
    • Assist in the onboarding and training of new school nurses ensuring a comprehensive understanding of RCPS health services policies and procedures.
    • Provide clinic coverage as needed ensuring continuity of care and help maintain consistent support for student health needs throughout the school day.
  • Program Development & Implementation:
    • Collaborate with the staff and other stakeholders to develop review and revise district-wide health policies procedures and protocols.
    • Lead the implementation of health-related programs and initiatives such as immunization campaigns health screenings and wellness programs.
    • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of school health services recommending improvements and adjustments as needed.
    • Ensure compliance with all local state and federal health mandates including those related to communicable disease control and reporting.
  • Team Coordination & Communication:
    • Facilitate regular team meetings for school nurses to foster collaboration share best practices and address common challenges.
    • Promote effective communication channels between school nurses school administrators parents/guardians and external healthcare providers.
    • Act as a central point of contact for health-related inquiries from school staff parents and community partners.
    • Assist in the development of school health service schedules and allocation of nursing resources across the district.
  • Professional Development & Quality Improvement:
    • Identify professional development needs for the school nursing team and assist in coordinating relevant training and educational opportunities.
    • Promote a culture of continuous quality improvement within the school health services department including participation in performance improvement initiatives.
    • Stay current with emerging trends and best practices in school nursing public health and pediatric healthcare.
  • Emergency Preparedness:
    • Assist in the development and implementation of district-wide emergency response plans related to student health and medical emergencies.
    • Ensure school nurses are prepared to respond effectively to medical emergencies including appropriate training and access to necessary resources.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain accurate records and reports related to nursing activities student health data and program outcomes.
    • Assist with budget planning for health services supplies and equipment.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager or designated administrator.
  • Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned to meet organizational needs.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university required.
  • Licensure: Current unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience as a Registered Nurse with at least three (3) years in a school health setting preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience in leadership supervision or coordination of nursing staff.
  • Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
    • Extensive knowledge of school nursing principles practices and legal mandates (e.g. IDEA ADA HIPAA FERPA).
    • Strong leadership supervisory and team-building skills.
    • Exceptional communication (verbal and written) interpersonal and presentation skills.
    • Proven ability to analyze data identify trends and make data-driven decisions.
    • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
    • Proficiency in electronic health records systems and other relevant software applications.
    • Ability to foster a collaborative and supportive work environment.
    • Demonstrated commitment to promoting equity and access to healthcare for all students.
    • Current BLS/CPR/AED and First Aid certification required.

Physical Requirements:

The School Nurse Team Lead position may require standing walking bending lifting and the ability to respond quickly to emergency situations. Travel between school sites will be required.
