Head of Government Relations

Job Summary

This role provides leadership and strategic direction to the Government Relations team and ensures activities undertaken by the Government Relations team builds strong senior Government relationships that support Telstras public policy advocacy corporate strategy and reputation. This role provides an interface between the business and key senior external government stakeholders.

Job Description

The opportunity

This role will work with the Executive Public Affairs to ensure delivery against Telstras strategic priorities. You will lead the federal government relations team and further Telstras policy and commercial objectives by building trusted and credible relationships with key senior government stakeholders including Ministers and Secretaries of Departments.

What youll do

  • Leading the development and execution of Telstras government engagement strategy.

  • Leading the Government Relations team.

  • Identifying and managing emerging risks and opportunities in the political and regulatory landscape.

  • Supporting Telstras growth by identifying policy barriers and advocating for enabling reforms; and by securing Government support for critical Telstra commercial initiatives.

  • Positively influencing the policy and political environment through strong stakeholder management.

  • Effectively managing critical high profile issues with key internal and external stakeholders.

  • Contributing positively to Telstra and the industrys reputation.

About you

To be successful in the role youll need:

  • A deep understanding of government processes politics and policy cycles

  • Proven policy and commercial success working with government departments and agencies

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills

  • Strategic thinking and the ability to align advocacy with business goals

  • Experience managing complex and senior stakeholder environments

  • Proven experience in business planning activities and complex Australian corporate environments

  • Previous experience in technology or telecommunications industry desirable

  • Previous exposure and understanding of how regulatory processes work (knowledge of telco would be of assistance or other highly regulated sector) and the interactions of the political sphere

  • Previous experience managing complex customer issues
