- Bachelors degree in Biology Ecology Environmental Science (with a specialization in ecology preferred) or a related scientific discipline
- 10 years of progressively responsible experience in completing bird/wildlife sweeps and surveys (including knowledge of nesting behaviours) environmental assessments and development/implementation of wildlife protocols that comply with applicable regulations
- Demonstrated ability to accurately identify birds through acoustic/visual observations and provide appropriate advice based on bird behaviour and site context
- Proven ability to work with provincial and federal regulators on complex regulatory files and provide senior review/guidance for bird/wildlife surveys
- Preferred experience includes leading cross-functional teams where urban/natural areas intersect
- Must be a Professional Biologist registered in good standing with the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB)
- ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification is required and must be obtained within the first six months of employment
Skills required for success:
- Core Wildlife and Environmental Expertise: Strong knowledge of environmental assessment permitting provincial and federal wildlife protocols compliance procedures and relevant legislation. This includes understanding species range habitat natural history behaviour and identification (acoustic/visual normal/abnormal nesting behaviours)
- Field Experience and Practical Application: Hands-on experience with bird and wildlife surveys best management practices nest survey appropriateness and establishing setbacks and mitigation
- Proficiency in Wildlife Identification: Demonstrated high proficiency in general bird identification (80%) and perfect proficiency (100%) in identifying Species of Conservation Concern (SOCC)
- Leadership and Management Capabilities: Preferred skills include being an environmental champion experience with environmental management systems (like ISO 14001) ability to drive change and strong analytical critical thinking incident investigation risk assessment and management skills
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Preferred abilities include strong verbal and written communication for diverse audiences negotiation conflict management general leadership supervisory skills and effective planning and organization

What will you do
- Provide expert decisions and recommendations related to wildlife habitat and compliance with environmental regulations
- Assess train coach and mentor personnel involved in wildlife and environmental management activities building their capacity
- Oversee and ensure compliance with internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) and applicable environmental legislation and regulations
- Liaise with regulators report incidents and provide expert testimony in court proceedings when required
- Lead investigations for non-compliances and incidents including root cause investigations for systemic issues
- Develop and implement resource management plans and define success factors and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for compliance
- Manage and provide project management support for environmental programs and projects
- Direct environmental continual improvement programs and negotiate and establish environmental permits
- Manage relationships and interactions with City staff and senior managers government regulatory bodies citizens consultants and other key stakeholders
- Review research and maintain awareness of best management practices environmental legislation and emerging issues advising management on objectives and strategies
- Manage environmental incidents including liaison with regulatory bodies
- Ensure documentation registries and records are maintained to support the Citys environmental management system and processes
