The Reproductive Genetic Counselors at MGH as members of a multi-disciplinary team provide compassionate and personalized care for patients and their families around preconception and prenatal genetic issues. Counseling topics include preimplantation genetic screening prior infant/pregnancy with a genetic syndrome or birth defect carrier screening screening for chromosomal abnormalities prenatal ultrasound findings diagnostic testing family history of birth defect or genetic condition advanced maternal age and consanguinity. Job duties include reviewing of medical records obtaining family and pregnancy histories providing education and risk assessment explanation of screening and diagnostic tools review of genetic literature coordination of additional testing and referrals interpretation of results and communication of results to the patient and the referring clinician.


Job Summary

Summary
Provides genetic education counseling and support to patients and/or families who have genetic disorders birth defects or who may be at risk for inherited conditions. Serves across the organization in several specialty clinics including general genetics clinic metabolic clinic bone marrow transplant clinic cystic fibrosis clinic hearing loss clinic maternal fetal medicine neurofibromatosis clinic disorders of sexual development clinic and more.

Essential Functions
-Evaluate the evidence for gene-disease associations
-Collaborates and coordinates patient care with other disciplines and medical specialties
-Assesses individual or family risk for a variety of inherited conditions such as genetic disorders and birth defects.
-Assist in development of patient consents GC protocols SOPs and patient education materials.
-Provide an accurate risk assessment based on data obtained.
-Responds to relevant inquiries from patients staff and physicians.



Qualifications

EducationMasters Degree Genetic Counseling requiredCan this role accept experience in lieu of a degreeNoLicenses and CredentialsGenetic Counselor State License - Generic - HR Only requiredExperiencegenetics experience 1-2 years preferredKnowledge Skills and Abilities- Strong patient/customer service skills. - Good documentation and organizational skills and good attention to detail. - Ability to adhere to detailed survey research protocols. - Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. - Strong understanding of molecular genetics and general chemistry. - Good attention to detail and analytical.
