Job summary
- The Utility Engineer is responsible for ensuring reliable operation maintenance and continuous improvement of utility systems across milling and animal feed plants. This includes leading and supervising preventive and corrective maintenance activities implementing system upgrades and modifications and managing utility improvement projects.
- The role is critical in maintaining high system performance and availability to support core production operations. The Utility Engineer also oversees resource planning coordinates with contractors and ensures all work complies with SOPs GMP standards technical specifications and service level agreements.
Main responsibilities
Accountability
- Leads and/or carries out the execution of maintenance activities including installations modifications repairs and replacements of utility systems to ensure continuous operation and minimize unplanned downtime.
- Provides timely technical supportboth on-site and remotelyto ensure utility systems operate at optimal performance levels and to prevent disruptions to production processes.
- Monitors and manages maintenance work orders in the system ensuring timely updates prioritization and follow-up to maintain accurate maintenance records and efficient workflow.
- Conducts regular inspections of utility systems equipment and machinery to identify faults or inefficiencies determine root causes and implement corrective actions while effectively allocating resources for maximum efficiency.
- Assists in the identification and elimination of defects and errors in utility systems using root cause analysis and measurement instruments.
- Participates in continuous improvement and optimization activities (e.g. schedule reviews) and implements preventive maintenance tactics using effective maintenance management practices and root cause failure analysis.
- Performs regular inspections and site surveys (Walkabouts) to check for damage hazards and other non-conformities.
- Inspects the work site to determine the materials equipment tool requirements and methods to be used.
- Maintains records of utility activities including project/work progress contractor payment requisitions and other customized reports as needed.
- Assists in generating proposals cost calculations and the preparation of financial projections.
- Tracks the stock level of critical materials spare parts tools or equipment for the companys utility systems to ensure their availability
- Advises and recommends to stakeholders on the ongoing usage of problematic devices and equipment.
- Completes assigned project tasks in compliance with company SOPP HSE GMP quality protocols and measurements by inspecting the work site to determine the required resources equipment tools and methods to be used.
Key relationships
- Production & Operations Teams Collaborates to ensure utility systems support continuous and efficient production; provides timely technical support during breakdowns.
Maintenance & Engineering
- Department Coordinates on preventive and corrective maintenance plans resource allocation and system upgrades.
- Vendors and Contractors Liaises for sourcing spare parts equipment and technical services; oversees maintenance or installation work to ensure compliance.
- Quality & HSE Teams Works closely to ensure utility operations meet quality safety and environmental standards (e.g. GMP HSE compliance).
Role Dimensions

- Budget / Expenditure:Recommends cost-effective solutions and approves minor expenses within limits.

Job requirements
Required qualifications
- Minimum Bachelors Degree Electrical Engineering
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Electrical or Industrial Engineering. Certification or training in utility systems
- Knowledge of GMP HSE and preventive maintenance systems. Required experience
- A minimum of 2-3 Years experience in a similar role and industry.
Preferred experience
- 3 plus years of hands-on experience in utility systems operation and maintenance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.

Preventive & Corrective
- Maintenance Understanding of maintenance plans and best practices to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
- Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) Standards Familiarity with HSE protocols and compliance requirements to ensure safe utility operations.
- Good Manufacturing
- Practices (GMP) Knowledge of GMP standards to maintain quality and safety in utility-related operations especially in regulated industries.
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Ability to apply analytical methods to identify and resolve recurring utility system issues.
