Job Description

Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Production and working under the direction of the Technical Director the Scene Shop Supervisor manages the scene shop fabricates scenery and guides students in our shops and stages for the Theatre and Dance production season. A typical 14-week semester includes three mainstage productions three studio productions and class-based and student-led performance projects.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Take the lead in fabrication of scenic elements for the Department of Theatre and Dance.

  • Assist with specialty fabrication projects as needed.

  • In collaboration with the Technical Director ensure adequate staff and student coverage and determine overhire needs.

  • Schedule organize and attend all shop work calls lead student shop hours facilitate and assist in trucking scenery load-ins and strikes.

  • Maintain a clean and organized shop space and performance venue and teach and enforce best practices to promote a safe working environment.

  • Maintain shop supplies inventory and tool maintenance/repair and lead improvement efforts to shop tools infrastructure and practices.

  • Participate in venue improvement maintenance and repair in collaboration with the CART Performance Operations team.

  • Serve as Instructor of Record for THTR 200: Production Stagecraft (practicum) each semester.

  • Work proactively and cooperatively with other technical teams to ensure the success of productions.

  • Cultivate a positive and supportive learning environment for student designers and student technical workers.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

  • A Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Minimum of three years of experience in theatrical scenic fabrication.

  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings.

  • Demonstrated proficiency and advanced knowledge of scenic fabrication.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in planning crew scheduling and project workflow in an active shop environment.

  • Valid Drivers License and competency in driving a cargo van and 26 box truck.

  • Ability to work at heights use aerial lifts and climb ladders.

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

  • General understanding of current best health and safety practices within the US Theatre Industry.

  • Experience ability and commitment to creating a working environment that is supportive open and respectful.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include nights and weekends depending on the production schedule.

PREFERRED:

  • Familiarity with CNC machinery programming operation and maintenance.

  • Carpentry experience and proficiency with most carpentry tools.

  • Metalwork experience and proficiency with welding equipment steel fabrication and common metalworking tools.

  • Rigging and counterweight fly system proficiency single purchase and double purchase.

  • OSHA 10 ETCP Rigging Theater OSHA Lift Training and/or First Aid Training certifications.

  • Proficiency in one or more of the following: AutoCAD VCarve Vectorworks and SolidWorks.

  • Inventory management and stocking experience.

  • Familiarity with 3D printers laser cutters and large format printers.

  • Experience in an educational production environment and student mentorship.

Salary Range

$73899.90-$81286.80 Annually
