Perform skilled maintenance and repairs to equipment typical to grounds and parking lot maintenance including heavy equipment operation. This position is considered essential during natural and man-made disasters and during inclement weather. Employee will report for duty as directed by their supervisor and is subject to recall during these types of events.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS
The specific tasks which are listed for the principal responsibilities are among those which are the most common or frequent. It is understood that other tasks are also required to be performed and that this position involves all tasks which are required or desirable to be done in connection with the performance of each responsibility; whether or not such tasks are specifically stated described or listed.
Install maintain and repair various equipment frequently used in grounds and roads maintenance such as lawn mowers string trimmers chain saws lawn sweepers snow blowers field/parking lot liners skid steer loaders and other heavy equipment.
Perform all routine maintenance and repairs to a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines. Regular engine servicing i.e. tune-ups lubrications filters and electrical systems; small to medium sized engine overhauls and rebuilding ordering necessary repair parts and maintain a parts inventory.
Repair and service hydraulic systems and components pumps motors valves hoses and cylinders. Tasks involve rebuilding light and heavy hydraulic cylinders.
Service and repair heavy equipment used for snow removal and landscaping skid loaders and 4 wheel drive articulating wheel loaders.
Seasonal tear down and set up of snow and turf equipment such as rotary brooms plows blowers various size mowing decks lawn sweepers etc.
Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 70%
Remove snow and ice from campus streets parking lots and walkways to ensure vehicular traffic parking and pedestrian use of walkways will be facilitated.
Operate a wide range of snow removal equipment including plow trucks dump trucks skid loaders and snow blowers.
Shovel walks steps wheelchair cuts and ramps.
Sand and salt icy areas that cannot be physically removed. Maintain written records on sanding and ice control.
Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 15%
Assist in the maintenance of turf areas and other related grounds keeping activities to ensure that grounds continue to be free of litter and look trim and attractive.
Mow and trim turf all related equipment.
Supervise and train student workers to ensure that they are properly instructed on mowing and safety procedures.
Repair/service turf irrigation systems.
Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 10%
Train and assist in supervising part-time student assigned to grounds.
Utilize a safety program.
Assign work to students.
Instruct students in the proper methods of operating and maintaining the equipment they are using.
Monitor students during equipment check-out and check-in times and also during time they are performing maintenance duties or shop clean up.
Priority: Essential Percent of Time: 5%
Minimum Qualifications
Employee must be available for snow removal including nights early mornings weekends and possibly holidays.
The individual in this position must be familiar with everyday preventative maintenance and repair of a wide variety of grounds equipment; the skills in a variety of trades and the ability to use the tools applicable to each.
Considerable knowledge in gasoline and diesel engines and other mechanical equipment.
This position requires a cooperative working relationship with all other tradesmen as well as faculty staff students and on occasion the public. Most communication with these people is verbal.
The employee shall follow all safety rules and regulations and take all necessary precautions to prevent injury and illness.
Lifting stair and ladder climbing are involved with tasks to be performed.
Preferred Qualification
This position requires a Service Technician certificate skilled hands on repair of 2 and 4 cycle gas engines and diesel powered equipment from tune ups to overhaul repairs.
Employee is required to possess a commercial class B drivers license or willing to obtain within 6 months of employment and is subject to the requirements of the universitys drug and alcohol testing program.
