Job Description

Title:

Teacher of Students with a Visual Impairment

Reports To: Special Education Supervisor

Location of Work:

Base Location: Special Services Building

701 South Paw Paw Street

Lawrence MI 49064

Job Goal(s): The primary goal of the Teacher of Students With Visual Impairment is to provide the full continuum of services to students with a visual impairment.

Qualifications:

Education & Certification:

Minimum of a bachelors degree and a special education teaching certificate with approval to teach students with visual impairment (or ability to obtain this approval)

Work Experience:

Previous experience with students having visual impairment is preferred

Skills:

  • Ability to provide an individualized and comprehensive evaluation to determine eligibility for a visual impairment
  • Ability to communicate with physicians parents and schools using both school and medical terminology related to the area of vision
  • Ability to provide alternatives to print (i.e. Braille and auditory techniques) to provide access to the educational setting
  • Ability to identify and recommend adaptive equipment (i.e. m-print Braille writer CCTV) to increase access.
  • Ability to participate in educational planning and provide recommendations for programs and/or services
  • Ability to provide services to students with visual impairments across all environments and ages
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students parents staff and other agencies
  • Ability to lead develop and participate in the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process
  • Ability to track document and communicate services provided and student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
  • Ability to follow Van Buren ISD state and federal policies and procedures
  • Ability to model the principles of Respect Integrity Compassion and Excellence
  • Ability to complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon or established timelines
  • Ability to perform additional tasks responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor

Essential Job Functions:

  • Ability to sit and work on a computer for long periods of time
  • Ability to travel across the county to multiple school locations
  • Ability to walk back and forth multiple times across a school
  • Valid drivers license required.

Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
