This is apprentice-level skilled work in the construction operation and maintenance of gas distribution systems and facilities.
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited direct observation and supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its increased technical responsibilities and ability to work under limited direct observation and supervision.


Must be able to meet GRU distance requirements of being able to be at the intersection of NW 34th Street and NW 39th Avenue within 40 minutes at 7p.m.

Job Description:

SUMMARY

This is apprentice-level skilled work in the construction operation and maintenance of gas distribution systems and facilities.

Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited direct observation and supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its increased technical responsibilities and ability to work under limited direct observation and supervision.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs physical and technical construction operation maintenance and repair activities of the gas service and main lines and associated facilities and systems.

Make polyethylene pipe heat fusion joints.

Performs tapping and stopping procedures on pressurized gas mains and service lines.

Installs maintains and repairs service and main lines.

Operates gas service line trenching equipment.

Enters work order data accurately.

Produces field maps and drawings.

Uses hand pneumatic electric tools and other pipeline equipment in the construction operation maintenance and repair activities of the gas system and associated facilities.

Responds to emergencies.

Assists in training and mentoring less experienced personnel in the performance of the operation maintenance construction and repair of gas facilities and systems.

Assists or performs work of subordinates.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

May be required to directly observe non-qualified personnel perform specific tasks associated with the construction operation maintenance and repair of gas distribution systems.

May be required to transport mix handle or use hazardous materials (other than cans of gasoline batteries pumping fuel or access to normal janitorial cleaning material) or may be responsible for facilities or equipment carrying current fluids or gas that could endanger the public or other employees.

May frequently transport other employees depending upon assignment and work location.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education experience knowledge skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required. Passing the appropriate GRU trainability exam may be required.

One (1) year of experience in the construction operation maintenance and repair of a gas distribution system including using related tools and equipment or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.

Pre-employment medical examination and satisfactory drug screening required.

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES

Licenses

A valid Florida Drivers License is required at the time of appointment and at all times while employed in this classification.

Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A required within six (6) months from the time of appointment.

Certifications

Must participate in the GRU Gas Worker Progression-Through-Training Program

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of methods practices and materials used in the construction and maintenance of gas facilities.

Ability to acquire and demonstrate knowledge of departmental policies and procedures including the General Operation and Maintenance Procedure and Gas Department Construction Manuals.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and procedures including traffic control in the gas industry.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods in assigned areas of responsibility.

Ability to acquire and demonstrate knowledge of City and County geography.

Ability to read understand and work from engineering maps drawings blueprints and sketches.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers community agencies other City employees and the general public.

Demonstrated working knowledge of personal computers and related departmental software.

Ability to prepare and maintain records reports and work requests.

Ability to operate work-related equipment.

Skilled in the use care and general maintenance of related equipment and tools.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work-related environmental conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Subject to Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) drug testing.

Pre-employment medical examination and satisfactory drug screening required.

Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential functions including the ability to lift kneel push pull and stoop while carrying a load of 50 pounds without assistance.

Requires the ability to use respiratory protection equipment in compliance with OSHA regulations.

Work requires the use of personal protection equipment including hearing eye foot hand and head protection.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may require performing tasks in and around heavy traffic.

Work may require exposure to prolonged high noise levels requiring the use of personal protective equipment.

Work requires performing tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

Work requires exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals.
