Job Goal(s):
The overall job goal of the LEA Payroll & Accounting Specialist will be to support the Local Business Office by primarily processing and recording payroll on a bi-weekly basis in addition to assisting with the day-to-day fiscal accounting of the district to assure compliance with all State and Federal accounting practices for Michigan Public Schools.
Salary Range:
$50000 - $65000 (Commensurate with Experience & Qualifications)
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Associates degree or equivalent required
Bachelors degree in accounting or equivalent preferred
Work Experience:
Three years of payroll/data processing experience preferably in a school district
Skills:
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles and financial reporting
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Office applications and other technology.
- Proficient in applying school fund accounting principles
- Proficient with payroll fundamentals
- Excellent attention to detail accuracy and problem-solving skills
- Strong customer service and communication skills to effectively interact with employees and vendors
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Essential Job Functions:
- Compute and process payroll bi-weekly utilizing system driven reports employee lists and wage/salary rate schedules
- Maintain district payroll files and records as supporting documentation.
- Enter all information into accounting software for payroll accounts and verify accuracy.
- Compute all deductions for state and federal taxes FICA pension contributions and generate all necessary back-up reports.
- Complete and submit Michigan retirement reports biweekly reviewing for accuracy and discrepancies.
- Input benefit information into accounting software.
- Process all required payroll payments and reports necessary for the completion of payroll.
- Prepare and maintain compensation spreadsheets.
- Assist with completion of workers compensation audit.
- Gather data and assist with annual required state reporting (FIDExcess Cost Report Final Expenditure Reports etc.)
- Perform month end closing activities and reconcile bank accounts monthly.
- Maintain district purchase card program and prepare credit card transactions to upload files for the General Ledger.
- Provide accounting related support to grants and year end accounting audit preparation
- Understand and reconcile state and federal grants.
- Enter daily monthly and year end journal entries.
- Work with district accounting staff to identify and modify system procedures to improve productivity
- Prepare and verify quarterly and monthly reports - 941 and UIA etc.
- Generate and process W-2 year-end statements.
- Prepare annual 1099 and related schedules for IRS reporting
- Perform additional tasks responsibilities and duties as assigned by the LEA Business Manager
- Valid drivers license required
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
