Job Summary:

The Flight Paramedic provides advanced pre-hospital and inter-facility patient care from initial contact until care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility. Maintains thorough patient care documentation of assessment and intervention throughout the entire transport and will practice within the scope of practice as defined by the state of Tennessee and programs protocols. Demonstrates proficient clinical knowledge and competency of psychomotor skills during transport and will maintain through actively participating in ongoing advanced skills laboratories and hand-on clinical exercises. Acts as a clinical role model and resource to resolve complex situations and patient care issues. Participates in improvement activities and problem solving projects as assigned by the leadership team. Communicates safety concerns to leadership team educational needs of customers and service area and deliver stellar customer service to both internal and external customers.

Qualifications

Must be available to work Days and Night shifts 36 hours weekly
Minimum of 3 years of recent experience as a paramedic
Minimum of 1 year of flight paramedic experience
Current Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C)
Ability to obtain a paramedic license with Critical Care Endorsement valid in Tennessee Kentucky and Alabama (Paramedics with previous critical care transport experience may obtain the Tennessee Critical Care endorsement within 12 months of hire)
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) with an advanced skills lab and advanced lecture components
United States Passport - Obtain within 90 days of hire.


Vanderbilt LifeFlight is nationally-recognized for our advanced set of protocols and our flight medicine practitioners generous scope of practice including:

Chest tube insertion
Central line insertion
Surgical airways
Pericardiocentesis
Rapid sequence intubation


Department Summary

Vanderbilt LifeFlight is part ofVanderbilt University Medical Centerand is a comprehensive emergency medical services provider including air and ground ambulance transport Event Medicine coverage and Emergency Communications. Vanderbilt LifeFlights air operations is provided byAir Methods Corporation. All medical staffing patient care and clinical services is provided by Vanderbilt University Medical Center. All ground ambulance and event medicine services are operated by Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

By air or ground VanderbiltLifeFlight will transport a patient to any medically appropriate hospital. Our crews have access to the regions only Level I Trauma Center Burn Center and Childrens Hospital all at Vanderbilt. LifeFlight is a key part of a trauma system that includes pre-hospital care definitive care rehabilitation and injury prevention. We are nationally recognized for quality and safety.


Sign-on Bonus

The sign-on bonus is not applicable to current VUMC staff or former staff who have worked for VUMC in the past twelve months. The sign-on bonus is only available for full-time positions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and manages care according to the LifeFlight and VUMC standards while able to independently plan deliver and evaluate goal focused individualized safe age specific care for all patients within the scope of TN and Vanderbilt Scope of Practice.
Maintains clinical proficiency and competency per regulatory and accreditation compliance.
Participates in (self and program) improvement activities and problem solving projects.
Reviews current research and participates in applying findings for evidence based practice.
Competent in documentation that accurately reflects care provided and meets LifeFlight documentation standards.
Competent in collaborative communication to facilitate quality patient care and ensure safe hand off when care is relinquished at the accepting facility.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
Medication Management (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of Medication Management in practical applications of a difficult nature. Conducted individual or group interventions to improve the ability of an individual to self administer medications as prescribed offering improvement in insight education regarding side effects effects of medication and level of symptoms. Conducted systematic and regular assessment of actual or potential side effects experienced by a person as a result of prescribed medication. Possesses sufficient knowledge training and experience to be capable of successfully conducting Medication Management without requiring support and instruction from others.
Assessing Intervening & Stabilizing Patients (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of assessing intervening and stabilizing patients in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge training and experience to be capable of successfully assessing intervening and stabilizing patients without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example giving technical instruction providing leadership and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
Airway Establishing (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of airway establishing in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge training and experience to be capable of successfully delivering airway establishing services without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example giving technical instruction providing leadership and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
Critical Thinking (Intermediate): Clearly and quickly demonstrates the recognition of assumptions and concepts. Shows a solid empirical grounding and a sound reasoning leading to conclusions implications and consequences. Able to accept and understand objections from alternative viewpoints. Responsive to variable subject matter issues and purposes.
Ventilator Management (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of ventilator management in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge training and experience to be capable of successfully delivering ventilator management services without requiring support and instruction from others. Able to train and educate by setting the example giving technical instruction providing leadership and generally raising the level of performance of others while on the job.
