Salem High School is the recipient of the Career Technical Initiative grant from Commonwealth Corporation on behalf of the Baker Administration to increase a skilled workforce in the trades through third shift programs.

This initiative announced by Governor Baker seeks to address the persistent need for skilled labor in construction trades and manufacturing. Commonwealth Corporation administers these funds in hopes of eliminating the skills gap facing employers by providing an opportunity for youth and adults to retrain for skilled occupations as well as transforming vocational high schools into Career Technical Institutes that run three shifts a day to bring more high school students and adults into the program.

As part of a multi-year strategy CTI plans to train 20000 new skilled workers in key trades and technical jobs. Among the grants approved by the Workforce Skills Cabinet in 2021 35 new career pathway programs and 22 expansions of career pathway programs at 10 vocational-technical schools will provide training and job placement for more than 800 adults.

Position Summary:
Salem Technical Institute (STI) the adult education division of Salem High School and Salem Public Schools is seeking a dependable approachable and safety-minded individual to serve as our Evening Welcome & Safety Coordinator. This part-time grant-funded position is essential in maintaining a secure and welcoming environment for adult learners staff and visitors attending evening programs.

The Welcome & Safety Coordinator will be stationed in the STI lobby and serve as the first point of contact for everyone entering the facility during evening hours. The ideal candidate will balance attention to safety with excellent customer service ensuring only authorized individuals enter the building while helping maintain a positive and professional atmosphere.

Schedule:
Evening hours typically Monday through Thursday approximately 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM (aligned with STI class sessions). Additional hours may be required for special events or coverage needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the front entrance and lobby area during evening adult education programming
  • Greet and check in students staff and visitors; verify attendance and ensure proper identification
  • Enforce building entry protocols to maintain a safe and secure learning environment
  • Maintain a sign-in/sign-out system for visitors and late arrivals
  • Provide directions and basic assistance to students and guests unfamiliar with the building
  • Collaborate with the STI Director of Workforce Development and other staff to report safety concerns or unusual activity
  • Maintain a calm professional demeanor during emergencies or when addressing concerns
  • Support evening program staff by helping maintain order in common areas
  • Ensure that lobby space remains tidy and accessible throughout the shift

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Experience in school security customer service or a front-desk role preferred
  • Friendly professional communication style
  • Ability to maintain composure in high-traffic or challenging situations
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong sense of responsibility
  • Bilingual skills (especially Spanish or Haitian Creole) are strongly preferred but not required
  • Ability to pass CORI/SORI background check

This is a grant-funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon future funding.

Work Year: September 1st 2025 - May 30th 2027

FTE/Hours: Part-time evening hours: 4:30pm - 9:30pm Monday through Thursday.

Reports to: STI Workforce Development Director CTE/STI Director Director of Operations SHS Principal

Salary/Hourly: $23.00
