Job Description

The Health & Counseling Center (HCC) is a fully integrated on-campus accredited college health center that provides a wide range of medical and mental health services. The University of Denver is deeply committed to Inclusive Excellence and Equity and seeks a .8 FTE Staff Counselor/Trauma Specialist who possesses cultural humility and a strong understanding of systems of oppression and can integrate those perspective into all their work. This position works in the Counseling unit at the HCC.

The mission of the HCC is to enhance overall student well-being and success through inclusive physical and mental healthcare prevention education advocacy and recovery support services. Most shifts are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with occasional shifts from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Physicians nurses psychologists nurse practitioners physician assistants and other health professionals staff the HCC. All students enrolled for academic credit (full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate) may use the HCC.

Position Summary

The Counseling Services department at the University of Denver Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is seeking a Staff Counselor/Trauma Specialist (.8 FTE benefited). This specialist position is for licensed mental health providers with interest and expertise in treating trauma especially survivors of sexual assault racialized trauma and/or other interpersonal violence. Along with providing both short-term and long-term psychotherapy this counselor will work in close partnership with the Center for Advocacy Prevention and Empowerment (CAPE) another department in the HCC that supports campus community members who have experienced interpersonal and gender violence. This position provides direct counseling/psychotherapy crisis intervention and outreach/prevention services to DU students and along with a specialty in trauma will involve some generalist clinical work with a range of issues. The .8 FTE schedule is envisioned as a full-time may include covering one of the extended hours days 10-month position with time-off in the summer and/or December to match HCC coverage needs.

Essential Functions

Provide direct counseling/psychotherapy services (individual crisis couples and group treatment) to DU students primarily focused on supporting students who have experienced trauma.

  • Provide crisis intervention services via both our daytime crisis system (Counselor of the Day and Crisis Time coverage) and serving as back-up support for our after-hours on-call system.
  • Serve as a liaison to CAPE and the EOIX (Equal Opportunity/Title IX) Office.
  • Provide supervision and training to trainees as qualified and assigned.
  • Maintain client records in a timely manner and according to HCC procedures.
  • Maintain competency and enhance professional growth and development through continuing education activities.

Percentages:

  • 60% Counseling/psychotherapy/supervision/crisis
  • 20% Liaison and Outreach with campus partners including but not limited to CAPE Title IX etc.
  • 20% Administration (including 1 hour/week senior staff meeting; 1 hour/week full staff meeting; charting intakes progress notes termination summaries; handling telephone calls snail mail email)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills with the ability to function independently with a broad perspective maturity discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to function independently and to supervise and train several personnel.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with various students coworkers and departments with a positive attitude and to adapt to change with equanimity. This position also requires extensive collaboration with a variety of offices on campus and a variety of external stakeholders and service providers.
  • Ability to manage complex situations and to handle hostile and combative situations.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity equity and inclusion through involvement and participation in department and university/division-wide projects and initiatives.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Office environment especially Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel and the ability to communicate effectively through email is essential. Familiarity and experience with electronic medical records systems is desirable.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed in the State of Colorado as an LCSW LPC LMFT or psychologist (or license eligible within three months).
  • 2 years experience working with survivors of trauma interpersonal violence racialized trauma and/or sexual assault.
  • Expertise in trauma treatment and crisis intervention: may include certifications in EMDR CPT DBT etc.
  • Experience with crisis management/intervention.
  • Experience providing counseling/psychotherapy/supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with communities of color and other diverse populations.
  • Experience working on a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience supervising trainees.
  • Two years experience in university/college counseling center or similar clinical environment.
  • Ph.D. or Psy.D Counseling or Clinical Psychology

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended periods of time.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Salary Grade Number

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $65600-$68000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
