Position Overview
The Community Event Host is a casual on-call position responsible for supporting evening and weekend rentals at Fernwood Neighbourhood House. This role is ideal for someone who is friendly reliable and enjoys working independently to help keep a well-loved community space running smoothly. Youll be the first and last face our renters see helping open and close the space answering any quick questions and making sure renters have what they need for a successful event.
This is an on-call position. Shifts are not guaranteed but are offered based on scheduled events and availability. Most shifts fall on weekday evenings or weekends and hours vary depending on the needs of the event.
Key Responsibilities
Open and close the building for evening and weekend rentals
Greet renters and ensure they have what they need to get set up
Take payment and issue receipts when required
Perform light setup and tidy-up duties (e.g. garbage out chairs stacked floors checked ensure washrooms are clean stoked and presentable)
Complete basic rental checklists and walkthroughs before/after each event
Report issues or maintenance concerns to the Operations team
Provide a calm supportive presence in the space when needed
Qualifications
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Experience working independently and responsibly
Ability to handle small issues as they arise with a solutions-oriented mindset
Comfort handling basic payments (cash or card)
Interest in community work and creating welcoming inclusive spaces
Ability to lift and move chairs/tables (up to 30 lbs)
Available for evening and weekend shifts
Additional Assets (Not Required)
Previous experience in community spaces hospitality or events
First Aid or Naloxone certification
Familiarity with Fernwood and surrounding neighbourhoods
Required
Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check upon hire
Two professional references will be requested during the hiring process
Compensation & Benefits
Wage: $19.50/hour

Unionized Position
Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace and this position is part of the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU). We are currently negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.
Please note that following the ratification of the collective agreement union dues will be deducted from employees pay in accordance with the terms outlined in the collective agreement and BCGEU policies.
