Job Title: LIBRARY SPECIALIST

Classification: Support Personnel Pay Scale

Range: III

Description: The Library Specialist performs a variety of tasks necessary for the effective operation of the school library including processing new library materials cataloging and classifying print and non-print materials and maintaining the circulation desk. Additionally they will develop and implement reading incentive programs and facilitate regular book checkouts by students. They supervise students and assist with other duties as assigned including but not limited to student supervision responsibilities such as playground lunchroom arrival dismissal and crossing guard duties. Exposure to heat sun varying temperatures and outdoor conditions is a routine part of the work assignment.

Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Sixty (60) college credit hours and/or an Associate Arts Degree or higher is preferred
  • In lieu of an AA degree provide evidence of a passing score on the Paraprofessional Assessment
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Possession of an Arizona Substitute certificate or willingness and eligibility to obtain one
  • One (1) year of closely related job experience preferred preferably in a school setting
  • Proficient use of technology (Internet Google Workspace Word Excel software programs )
  • Knowledge of standard office equipment (telephones copiers printers )
  • Must have technology aptitude and be able to expand knowledge of technology as it relates to education
  • Proficient in the English language (reading writing and oral communication)
  • Knowledge of Spanish preferred
  • Ability to comprehend and follow directions from written and verbal instructions
  • Knowledge of arithmetic and basic mathematical procedures
  • Knowledge of library management programs is preferred
  • Ability to learn utilize and maintain an automated library system
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to comprehend and perform functions from written and oral instructions
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Take initiative adhere to time restraints assess multiple needs and prioritize actions
  • Prior experience in a school library/media center setting and library management programs is preferred
  • Able to stand for extended periods
  • Ability and willingness to perform student supervision duties including outside and lunchroom duties
  • Must be able to perform duties requiring physical demands such as reaching bending kneeling
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds

Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Governing Board or the Superintendent may deem appropriate

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist students and teachers in the selection of appropriate books and materials
  • Instruct students and staff regarding the proper use and care of library equipment materials and resources
  • Ability and willingness to work with a variety of age levels (Pre-K-eighth grade) in the library setting
  • Contribute to the overall positive climate of the school through all actions and interactions
  • Report any concerns about student safety to the administration
  • Establish and maintain an organized functional and visually appealing library incorporating the use of library management software
  • Facilitate and encourage students use of books and maintain current records of book circulation
  • Select and introduce age-appropriate literature to students to develop a culture of reading and a love of literacy including reading aloud to students regularly and developing incentives for students to read both at school and at home
  • Develop and implement effective classroom management to maintain acceptable student behavior ensure student safety and create a productive learning environment
  • Develop and maintain a positive environment promoting cooperation and learning
  • Maintain current and well-organized library files and records of all media center materials and equipment including computers books printers videos cameras hardware software
  • Conduct an annual library inventory
  • Make minor repairs on books and other print and non-print materials in the media center collection
  • Establish and implement a preventive maintenance schedule for equipment and make minor repairs to equipment when applicable
  • Prepare and submit Purchase Orders Requisitions for supplies books subscriptions and other materials and equipment with oversight of the administration
  • Receive classify catalog and shelve all new materials including curriculum materials
  • Assist with the administration of student assessments as requested
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings grade-level meetings and any other group function as directed by site administration
  • Function as a classroom substitute when directed
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with administration students and all school personnel
  • Participate in professional development workshops/in-services attend ongoing training classes as directed
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and use appropriate discretion in all interactions with staff students and community members
  • Support and follow the rules regulations and policies set by the School Board the assigned school and the District
  • Refer any concerns regarding student safety to the classroom teacher and or site administration
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Governing School Board the Principal or designee

Length of Employment:

  • Ten (10) months
  • School calendar will determine the days worked during the school year

Reports to: Building Principal

Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy GDO
