Job Description

40% Installation and Modifications
  • Execute moves adds and changes (MACs) for university voice data and video networks.
  • Install jacks horizontal wiring cross-connects Ethernet switches wireless access points UPS systems video taps splitters amplifiers and other network components.
  • Utilize standard voice data and video installation practices ensuring compliance with university national technical and safety standards.
  • Read and interpret schematics wiring diagrams equipment specifications cable plant drawings and floor plans.
  • Use telecommunications tools and software proficiently.
  • Report unauthorized installations to the Installation and Maintenance Manager.
  • Testing of all new installations (fiber and copper) with various cable certification meters
20% Diagnosis and Repair
  • Troubleshoot and repair issues affecting voice data and video services including issues with cross-connects station equipment (e.g. phones fax machines) video components power and grounding.
  • Use appropriate test equipment (e.g. certifiers OTDR etc.) to aid in diagnosing issues.
  • Perform repairs involving cable pair changes component replacements equipment swaps and coordination with vendors (e.g. AT&T).
  • Document all changes in work order systems or within Remedy following current procedures.

10% Training
  • Provide training instruction and supervision to student technicians subcontractors and vendors.
  • Assign non-complex tasks and monitor their performance.
  • Train others in diagnostic methods and ICT installation standards.
  • Offer end-user training on basic equipment features when needed.
10% Special Projects and Assignments
  • Support emergency and high-impact projects affecting campus ICT services.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and provide support for athletic events and scheduled change requests.

10% Planning Organization and Related Duties
  • Coordinate priorities and schedules with supervisory staff to optimize work efficiency.
  • Maintain a clean and organized state of ICT infrastructure spaces and university-assigned vehicle.
  • Practice safe driving habits and maintain a valid drivers license.

5% - Vehicle upkeep
  • Monthly cleaning of the interior of the technician vehicle
  • Monthly car wash keeping the exterior clean
  • Scheduling routine maintenance of vehicle
  • Reporting any issues with the vehicle to the Technician manager

5% Inventory and Time Recording
  • Accurately track parts and materials used during service activities.
  • Initiate procurement of inventory items when needed.
  • Maintain accountability for tools and test equipment issued.
  • Ensure vehicle inventory and equipment are stocked and maintained.
  • Complete inventory and time documentation by current systems and procedures.

  1. Associate degree and two (2) years of relevant ICT installation and service experience OR a high school diploma/GED and four (4) years of relevant experience.
  2. Experience using ICT test equipment (e.g. copper certifiers OLTS OTDR) as shown in application materials.
  3. Valid drivers license.


  1. BICSI Installer 1 Installer 2 or Technician-level certification.
  2. Experience installing and troubleshooting Ethernet equipment LAN/WAN infrastructure and analog digital or VoIP telephone systems as evidenced in application materials.
  3. Experience completing network connections from wall jack to building interface as evidenced in application materials.
  4. Experience with fiber optic fusion splicing and related hand tools as evidenced in application materials.
  5. Familiarity with voice switching special circuits and data switching as evidenced in application materials.
  6. Experience installing video cables components and CATV systems as evidenced in application materials.
  7. Experience with fiber optic systems broadband technologies LAN wireless or WAN environments as evidenced in application materials.
  8. OSHA 10-hour and/or 30-hour safety training as evidenced in application materials.


Position Overview
The IT Installation & Maintenance Technician is responsible for the installation service provisioning and maintenance of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems for the University of Kansas Lawrence and Edwards campuses. Work often involves accessing confined spaces climbing ladders working aloft and operating on catwalks to install new cable/fiber. While all work must adhere to a master plan and established standards technicians are afforded the discretion to deviate when needed to ensure operability.

This role allows for considerable autonomy. Assignments are generally framed around goals or problems to resolve often with undefined initial conditions. Technicians are expected to apply sound judgment in selecting methods and materials operating within the boundaries of KU policies industry standards and safety requirements.

This position supports the universitys security objectives by following all applicable security policies and procedures.

KU IT is not able to provide H-1B sponsorship for this position.
