JOB POSITION #128 - Museum Manager and Educator

SALARY RANGE: $50 776 to $65000 annually

JOB DUTIES

The Riverside Nature Center is one of four active facilities within the City of Farmingtons Museum System. The Nature Center is located near the Animas River and within an extensive city-maintained trail system. The Center includes an activity room and classroom a small gallery an indoor wildlife viewing room and a giftshop. Its grounds include an outdoor classroom a duck pond a xeriscape demonstration garden and an orchard. The Nature Center shares hospitality staff and education assistants with the larger museum system and city parks operations personnel assist in maintaining the grounds.

In addition to being the primary educator for the Nature Center the Museum Manger and Educator works in collaboration with the other museum system staff (including an administrative coordinator exhibit designer collections manager and store coordinator) to maintain daily operations of the facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Works under the general supervision of the Farmington Museum Systems Museum Director and in collaboration with the museum systems other staff to develop programs events exhibits and activities that engage and educate visitors at the Riverside Nature Center.

Participates with senior museum staff in the development of exhibitions advocating for the visitor experience and a variety of educational opportunities. Works collaboratively to develop interactive educational spaces within the facility and grounds. Assist in researching designing and developing new exhibits for the Nature Center and the other museums within the system.

Supervises education staff and volunteers providing educational programming for children schools families and adults.

Recruits and supervises volunteers and gives direction to city parks personnel in maintaining and enhancing the outdoor classroom duck pond xeriscape demonstration garden and orchard.

Supervises hospitality staff assisting visitors and conducting store sales.

Collaborates with museum and other City staff on building maintenance and general operations.

Responsible for maintaining budgets for the Nature Center.

Develops updates evaluates and ensures the implementation of all programming including programs that integrate with school curricula for public private and home school groups.

Commitment to staying informed on museum and education trends to ensure the Nature Center remains vibrant and relevant to the community it serves.

Establishes community partnerships to expand the museums opportunities for collaboration in program delivery and education.

Coordinates with City of Farmington marketing staff for publications advertising and website development and content. Works with senior museum staff to build audience and participation throughout the museum system. Responsible for the content of educational materials for the Riverside Nature Center educational programs and assists with design.

May work with other divisions to implement general educational programs with the department of Cultural Affairs Department or other departments of the City of Farmington.

Works with the city-wide volunteer coordinator to recruit train and manage docents and other volunteers at the Riverside Nature Center and its outreach programs.

Works with museum store coordinator to acquire and sell the Riverside Nature Center exhibit and program-related merchandise at the museum stores; suggest products to stock and display.

This position may be called upon to oversee other Farmington Museum System functions/events.

Using excellent customer service skills establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees officials and all members of the general public.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the city.

Under direction from the Museum Director researches and writes grants and/or conducts outreach for funding at the Nature Center including for educational programs and exhibitions.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

May serve on various employee committees as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the Citys Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Program. This includes: pre-employment testing post-accident testing reasonable suspicion testing return-to-duty testing and follow-up testing. Extensive background checks required.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors degree in museum education environmental education outdoor education/recreation the natural sciences museum sciences or related field preferred. Equivalent course work and experience may be substituted.

Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification from the National Association for Interpretation a plus.

Valid New Mexico drivers license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Knowledge of professional museum education best practices and general educational programs for children families and adults required.

Knowledge and experience in modern educational philosophies and methodologies of living history environmental education ecology and/or wildlife biology curriculum preferred.

Experience managing a public facility preferred.

Must be flexible innovative self-motivated and have the ability to work independently.

Ability to supervise train motivate and direct staff and volunteers.

Must have excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.

Must be service oriented and have the ability to organize and meet deadlines.

Must have the ability to interact effectively with all age levels and cultural backgrounds.

Bilingual skills helpful but not required.

Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers supervisors other City personnel and the public.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the Citys Environmental Health and Safety program.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Personal computer and software including Google Suite Microsoft Word and Excel calculator copy machine phone and motor vehicle.
