JOB SUMMARY:

The job of Nurse is done for the purpose of overseeing the individual health needs of students; implementing health care plans directed by physicians; ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues; providing appropriate immediate care for ill medically fragile and /or injured students; serving as health care resource to teachers staff and administrators; conducting mandated vision screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow-up treatment.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelors degree in job related field
  2. State of Utah Nursing License
  3. Two (2) years nursing experience preferably in pediatrics

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Administers mandated vision screenings in grades K12359 and every three years before Special Education re-evaluations as well as upon request. Referrals to Speech and Language for hearing screening. Other referrals as needed for ill medically fragile and/or injured children.
  2. Administers first aid medication and specialized medical treatments (e.g. oral suctioning catheterization etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill medically fragile and/or injured children.
  3. Assesses situations involving students safety abuse (physical sexual drug etc.) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems referring for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements.
  4. Collaborates with parents students health care providers and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services providing information and complying with legal requirements.
  5. Conducts age-appropriate health education in conjunction with classroom curriculum such as health education nutritional workshops 56 grade maturation 3-6 grade Blood Borne Pathogen classes and other health education classes upon request for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans.
  6. Develops individual student care plans for the purpose of addressing students health needs; providing direction to site personnel and/or implementing directions provided by parents and/or physicians.
  7. Directs student health services for the purpose of prioritizing project activities ensuring utilization of personnel in compliance with site requirements and meeting mandated requirements.
  8. Maintains students confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans agency referrals etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
  9. Maintains contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention.
  10. Monitors students referred for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow-up care.
  11. Monitors students with chronic illnesses for the purpose of assisting the child in achieving the highest possible functional level.
  12. Participates in a variety of meetings workshops and seminars and interdisciplinary teams for the purpose of gathering conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs service delivery and educational programs and/or improving skills and knowledge.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  14. Collects and provides annual student data for State reports. Provides training on a variety of health-related subjects such as CPR and emergency first aid medication management administration of emergency medications (e.g. Epinephrine Asthma inhalers and Naloxone (secondary schools only)) health related policies and procedures substance abuse growth and development food allergies STDs and hygiene for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students teachers and other school personnel.
  15. Provides training on a variety of health-related subjects such as CPR and emergency first aid medication management administration of emergency medications (e.g. Epinephrine Asthma inhalers and Naloxone (secondary schools only)) health related policies and procedures substance abuse growth and development food allergies STDs and hygiene for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students teachers and other school personnel.
  16. Refers students requiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-up treatment and services.
  17. Reports health and safety issues (e.g. fights suspected child or substance abuse contagious diseases etc.) to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies for the purpose of maintaining student personal safety a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
  18. Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness nutrition treatment protocols childhood diseases etc.) for the purpose of providing information to staff students parents and the public.
  19. Assists school secretaries in maintaining adequate student immunizations immunization clinics throughout the school year to assist families in maintaining required immunizations.
  20. Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls prescription medication reactions bleeding etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. The usual and customary methods of performing job functions require sitting walking standing bending occasional lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling stooping kneeling; driving an automobile etc. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
  2. Driving to work locations.
  3. Risks found in the typical work environment which is adequately lighted heated and ventilated e.g. safe use of office equipment avoiding trips and falls observing fire regulations.
