Job Description

Basic Functions: To perform a variety of technical and clerical duties involving circulation reference and record keeping activities within a school library. Will act as a prime resource person regarding materials available. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision from the school administrator within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in his job class train coordinate and supervise the work of students and/or volunteer aides. This job class is responsible for the day-to-day operation of a library and requires a variety of specialized technical and organizational skills as well as creativeness and initiative.

Typical Duties:

  • Organizes and maintains the routine operations of a school site library
  • Checks library materials in and out (circulation) inspecting in-coming material for damage need for mending etc.
  • Processes books magazines and other materials into and out of the collection including assigning correct Dewey Decimal classification stamping school identification writing copy number pasting pockets and inserting charge cards etc.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports regarding circulation attendance monies collected lost material etc.
  • Supervises students using the library maintaining discipline as necessary.
  • Collects fines; provides notification and follow-up on overdue materials.
  • Answers questions on basic reference materials library procedures and use of library facilities directing users to appropriate area for retrieval of needed materials
  • Researches requests from teachers students and staff
  • Fills teacher requests for library materials
  • Performs inventory of collection reporting lost and damage materials and recommending withdrawals from and additions to the collection
  • Promotes the use of the library through displays bulletins and other means
  • Mends books and magazines sending out for binding as necessary
  • Maintains audio-visual files verifying return of all items notifying in the event of missing items and recording replaceable items when necessary
  • Schedules a conducts orientation sessions and class tours through the library
  • Trains and supervises student assistants and volunteers in proper library methods and techniques
  • Files catalogue cards shelves books and assists in the maintenance of the library
  • Uses a computer database for inventory and tracking of library collection
  • Selects orders and processes new books and supplies for the library or prescribe instructional programs
  • Serves as an information source to students parents teachers and other District personnel regarding books reading lists new publications etc.
  • Implements and coordinates special programs in the library such as book clubs reading clubs sway days etc.
  • Attends meetings and workshops related to the school library
  • Plans coordinates and staffs library fund-raisers completing financial reports and reconciling all accounts
  • Types a variety of materials such as catalogue cards bibliographies purchase orders shelf cards memos letters reports correspondence etc.
  • Opens sorts and/or files incoming mail
  • Performs related duties consistent with job description

Employment Standards:

  • Knowledge of the basic purpose organization and operation of a school library
  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of proper English grammar usage and spelling
  • Ability to conduct /direct library research using card catalogues dictionary encyclopedias and related reference material
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to learn standard library terminology and methods including the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to use standard office and library equipment
  • Ability to type accurately at 40 words per minute
  • Ability to plan and organize library activities and programs.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations using addition subtraction multiplication and division
  • Ability to establish and maintain a variety of records and filing systems
  • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
