Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for a Security Specialist for the Central Admission & Placement Unit to ensure the protection of the citizens of the Commonwealth and the youths committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice by adhering to safety and security policies and procedures in the transfer of youths between institutions and alternative placements. Provide direct supervision to committed residents during secure transportation and within Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center.


The work schedule is Monday-Friday typically 8:00am-4:30pm. It is important to note that due to traveling across the Commonwealth staff may have to come in early and there may be instances when they arrive back after 4:30pm. Additionally there may be overnight trips and weekends that may be required if we must provide transportation to a funeral and more.

Core Responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Supervision of committed residents during transportation and in institutions
  • Utilize safety and security equipment to secure residents during transfer to ensure the possibility of injury and escape is
    minimized
  • Documentation Record Keeping and Report Writing
  • Fleet Management
  • Ensure fleet vehicles are maintained mechanically and schedules routine maintenance of vehicles with the Central Garage
  • Routinely maintains cleanliness of inside and outside of vehicles
  • Ensures the maintenance and availability of safety equipment security equipment and sanitation for vehicles in the absence of the CAP Security Coordinator assists with the reservation of vehicles for Agency staff.


We are looking for someone who possess the following skills (not limited to):

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of full restraint hardware use of radios and administration of first aid
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with staff at alternative placements and youths
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally/writing and possess critical thinking skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to write reports as necessary and to complete documentation related to transportation
  • Extensive working knowledge of security equipment
  • Extensive working knowledge of human resources duties and training requirements of staff
  • Working knowledge of safety and security policies and procedures and crisis intervention
  • Experience driving multi-passenger transportation vans
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise youth to maintain safety security and to promote healthy interpersonal interaction.
