Job Title: Chief of Police and Security Operations Associate Vice Chancellor

Position #: Requisition #: 37199

Executive Summary:

The Chief of Police and Associate Vice Chancellor for Security Operations (AVC) serves as the head of law enforcement and security operations for the CU Anschutz Medical Campus a premier academic medical and research campus serving approximately 5000 students 15000 staff members and collaborating with hospital partners to manage over 2 million patient care visits annually. This position reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance CFO for the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. This individual is responsible for leading all aspects of the Campus Police Department (which includes sworn officers professional security and associated staff) and ensuring a safe secure and supportive environment for the institutions community. The Chief of Police and AVC will be a strategic leader partnering with institutional leaders local law enforcement public safety and healthcare organizations to address safety and security challenges specific to a dynamic academic medical and research-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Administration

  • Lead and oversee all law enforcement and public safety operations for the campus ensuring a safe and secure environment for students faculty staff and patients.
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives policies and procedures to promote safety and security across the campus and the external areas around the medical facilities.
  • Direct the work of the Campus Police Department providing supervision training and professional development for law enforcement officers and professional public safety staff.
  • Serve as a key advisor to senior leadership regarding issues of campus safety crime prevention and emergency response.
  • Represent the institution to external law enforcement agencies government officials and the local community on matters related to campus safety and policing.

Crime Prevention and Security Operations:

  • Develop and implement crime prevention strategies focusing on addressing both traditional campus issues (e.g. theft assault) and unique challenges in a medical and research environment (e.g. biosecurity healthcare-related crimes).
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness and response plans including the management of crisis situations such as active shooter incidents medical emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Oversee security operations for research facilities academic buildings medical clinics and affiliated entities ensuring that all areas comply with safety and security protocols.

Community Engagement and Collaboration:

  • Foster a strong community-policing approach by building trust and transparency with students faculty staff patients and visitors.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership student organizations staff associations and hospital partners to address safety concerns and enhance the campus experience.
  • Serve as a liaison with local police fire hospital security and emergency response teams to ensure coordinated efforts during critical incidents and shared public safety responsibilities.
  • Close collaboration with campus communication team and leadership.

Compliance and Policy Development:

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations including the Clery Act and healthcare-specific regulations related to patient confidentiality and safety
  • Maintain records and documentation of criminal investigations incidents and public safety activities in accordance with institutional policies and legal requirements.
  • Establish and enforce policies and procedures related to campus safety including parking enforcement emergency evacuations building security and medical safety protocols.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Manage the Campus Police Department budget allocating resources to maximize operational efficiency and address campus safety needs effectively.
  • Identify and pursue grants funding opportunities and partnerships to support security initiatives technological advancements and training programs.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $200000 $230000 annually.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the Universitys good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
