ONA is seeking to hire a Labour Relations Officer (Health Care Restructuring Specialist) to join our Negotiations Team. The ideal candidate will be accountable for providing lead support for recruitment and retention focused on Public Sector Labour Relations Transition Act (PSLRTA) through retention/PSLRTA campaigns health care restructuring sale of business related employer organizing campaigns and empowering the retention/growth of new ONA members. The successful candidate will be expected to mobilize health-care professionals in order that they can achieve or maintain representation at their workplace and in their communities through collective action. The successful candidate will think strategically take initiative and be creative in engaging health-care professionals in campaigns and provide the support needed to be successful.
This is what else you can expect from this dynamic role:
- Provides lead support to recruitment and retention focused on PSLRTA campaigns and health care restructuring within the province.
- Provides lead support on Sale of Business and Related Employer applications.
- Prepares contract comparisons as needed.
- Negotiates collective agreements when necessary.
- Consults on all campaigns and with ONA staff as appropriate.
- Tracks health care restructuring throughout the province.
- Direct servicing of some bargaining such as Integration/Transfer program transfers and first collective agreements post-PSLRTA as requested.
- Understands ONAs strategic outcomes and how ones individual role relates to ONAs broader outcomes.
- Accountable for having a working knowledge of ONAs governing policies Executive Limitations the Constitution Operating Standards and Guidelines.
- Provides service to members and staff in a manner that is consistent with member values and keeping the interests of staff as the primary focus of work.
- Identifies risks and opportunities related to ONA achieving its goals/mandate.
- Identifies skill knowledge and resource gaps as required to perform tasks.
- Makes observable contributions to the success of other team members and the overall performance of the team(s).
- Completes timely quality work to meet established goals timely fashion.
- Works to identify improvements to work processes.
- Ensures the individual and collective rights of members are achieved and maintained.
- Provides written reports to Management on areas of activity as required.
- Implements ONAs Organizing Strategy as determined by the Constitution and the Board of Directors.
What we are looking for:
The successful candidate will possess
- A degree or diploma as a Regulated Health Professional (Registered Nurse is preferred) and/or in Labour/Industrial Relations (or equivalent combination of education and experience satisfactory to ONA may be considered).
- Ability to effectively mediate and manage conflict; Alternative Dispute and Conflict Resolution and/or Advanced Mediation and Workplace Conflict Coaching Certification is an asset.
- A minimum of five (5) years of related work experience.
- Experience in PSLRTA campaigns including managing a successful PSLRTA/organizing drive.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation and have strong advocacy and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and managing a campaign and solid judgment in responding to inquiries from prospective members.
- Experience in negotiating collective agreements and/or front-line servicing bargaining unit members is preferred.
- Candidates should be motivated self-starters with a commitment to building strong unions.
- Must be flexible adaptable and able to work well with others in a team environment.
- Must be able to deal effectively with a rapidly changing work environment.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with staff ONA members and outside agencies.
- Must be able to assist with campaigns in all regions.
- Accountable for ensuring strategic outcomes are supported while responding to day- to-day demands.

Flexible schedule for some evening/weekend work especially around policy changes and government announcements as well as during election campaigns.
The successful candidate must be able to travel possess a valid drivers license and have access to an automobile for business use. Ability to travel across Ontario is also expected as could other areas outside of Ontario.
