Description

The University of Maine at Farmington and the Division of Education Health and Rehabilitation welcome passionate educators to join our team as a part-time adjunct faculty member to teach Social Studies Methods for Middle and Secondary Education (EDU 409) in Fall 2025. This online synchronous course will meet on Mondays from 5:00 p.m. 6:15 p.m.

In this course students explore the foundational and often complex issues of teaching social studies in todays middle and secondary classroomssuch as censorship academic freedom and the integration of disciplines like history economics geography political science and sociology. You will help students shape their personal philosophies of education while introducing effective instructional strategies and curricular resources.

Essential duties include but arenot limited to:

  • Lesson planning
  • Assignment design
  • Grading
  • Correspondence with students
  • Course coordination meetings
  • Required orientation and trainings (i.e. compliance training)

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Education or related field
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in Grades 6-12 settings as a Middle/Secondary Social Studies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in online and/or hybrid modalities
  • PhD or EdD in Education

Technology Requirements:

Part-time faculty members teaching at the University of Maine at Farmington are required to have the appropriate technology to teach in a fully online environment. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Computer (laptop) with appropriate amounts of processing speed
  • High-speed internet connection
  • Webcam
  • Microphone

Salary & Benefits:

Part-time faculty members are compensated on a per-credit-hour basis commensurate with qualifications experience and in accordance with the Maine Part-Time Faculty Association (PATFA) contract. Teaching opportunities in future semesters are based on course funding performance need and availability. Continuation is subject to the terms of the PATFA bargaining agreement and other applicable university policies.

Eligible part-time faculty members may elect certain benefitsprovided by the University of Maine System.
