The Fire Captain in the Community Risk Reduction Division is an exempt full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $39.07 - $43.95 per hour (equivalent to $81265 - $91416 annually);however an exact salarywill be dependent on the selected candidates qualifications and experience and in compliance with City Policy.

As the Fire Captain in the Community Risk Reduction Division youllserve in a critical supervisory and leadership role that is integral in shaping and maintaining the safety standards of the community. This position involves planning developing and implementing comprehensive community risk reduction programs and services while ensuring rigorous training of staff in fire prevention inspection techniques. As the Fire Captain youll be responsible for coordinating and managing fire code inspections fire investigations and overseeing division operations ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and regulations. Additionally youll supervise the Community Risk Reduction Divisions daily operations and act as a Deputy Fire Marshal in their absence.

In this multifaceted position youll conduct critical fire code inspections fire investigations and systematic reviews of construction plans along with overseeing equipment and system testing for both new and existing constructions. The role demands proactive handling of citizen complaints and queries related to fire prevention fire codes investigations and life safety education. The Fire Captain conducts technical inspections for compliance of hazardous materials and industrial operations and maintains effective communication with stakeholders such as the Deputy Fire Marshal developers and business owners. This role also entails presenting criminal cases and testifying in court for arson-related crimes liaising with the City Attorney and Commonwealth Attorneys Office on legal matters and preparing detailed inspection and investigation reports. Additionally the Fire Captain participates in rotating on-call duties to serve as Duty Officer for the division performs essential firefighter functions as needed and engages with other governmental agencies and insurance companies to foster effective collaboration and safety compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Special Requirements:
  • Certification in NFPA 1031 (Fire Inspector II) and NFPA 1033 (Fire Investigator) within 1 year of date in position.
  • Virginia Department of Fire Programs Basic Law Enforcement for Fire Marshal certification (or equivalent) within 2 years of date in position.
  • Environmental Crimes Certification preferred but not required for consideration.
The selected candidates for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
  • DMV Driving Record Review;
  • Drug Screen;
  • Personal History Statement*;
  • Criminal Background Investigation including Fingerprinting;
  • NFPA 1582 Physical Evaluation;
  • Psychological Evaluation;
  • Polygraph.
*Due to the sensitive nature of this positions essential functions the successful applicants selected for the role will be required to submit a completed Personal History Statement. At a later date more information will be provided to the candidate selected for this step in this process.
