DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR JOB DUTIES

Victims Advocate 1s work in the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorneys Office and County Clerks Office. They work with the victims of crimes. Duties may include conducting interviews counseling clients making referrals and recommendations serving as a liaison and advocate attending court hearings explaining programs and court orders maintaining records and processing required paperwork. The Victims Advocate 1 may assist clients in identifying and obtaining available benefits and social and community services.

Required Tasks

  • Provide emotional support and crisis counseling.
  • Explain court procedures; accompany victims to court; provide case update information
  • Make referrals to appropriate counseling agencies for long-term therapy when necessary.
  • Function as a team member with Assistant Prosecutors the Department of Human Services and Police Department Child Units.
  • Interview individuals or family members.
  • Submit reports and review reports
  • Maintain records and processing required paperwork
  • Conduct interviews and provide counseling on their rights/responsibilities relative to the PPO Victim Assistance program.
  • Track PPO cases via the Courts case management system and maintain filing service and referral statistics.
  • Serve as liaison and advocate on the victims behalf and accompany victims to court hearings when necessary.
  • Keep records or prepare reports for management concerning visits with clients.
  • Provide information or refer individuals to public or private agencies or community services for assistance relative to Personal Protection Orders.
  • Assist victims in completing the necessary documents for Crime Victims Compensation Claims when applicable
  • Interview individuals or family members to compile information on social educational criminal institutional or drug history.
  • Submit reports and review reports or problems with superior.
  • Perform data entry of case processing

Education/Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelors Degree in Psychology Sociology Criminal Justice Social Work Guidance and Counseling or Human/Social Services; AND
  • One (1) year of post degree experience in Human or Social Services Field;
