Job Description

Job Title: Phlebotomist
Overview
The role of a Phlebotomist at our Diagnostic Centre is a vital part of the healthcare team responsible for performing venipuncture and collecting blood samples from patients for diagnostic testing. This role ensures that accurate and high-quality specimens are collected stored and transported in accordance with established protocols. Phlebotomists play a crucial role in patient care by providing a compassionate and reassuring experience alleviating patient anxiety regarding the procedure. They work closely with physicians nurses and laboratory staff to ensure seamless coordination in patient diagnostics. The accuracy of test results is highly dependent on the quality of the blood samples collected making the Phlebotomist s role essential in ensuring proper diagnosis and treatment. This position requires strong interpersonal skills technical proficiency and a commitment to patient-centered care. As a Phlebotomist you will contribute significantly to the overall functioning of the diagnostic centre prioritizing safety accuracy and patient comfort.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary collections for patients of all ages.
  • Provide high-quality customer service and ensure patient comfort during blood collection.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure accuracy in the collection process.
  • Properly label and handle blood specimens according to protocols.
  • Adhere to Infection Control policies and blood-borne pathogen standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the blood collection area.
  • Communicate with patients explaining procedures and addressing concerns.
  • Document all phlebotomy procedures accurately in the medical records.
  • Ensure timely delivery of specimens to the laboratory for analysis.
  • Monitor and manage supplies necessary for blood collection.
  • Conduct quality control checks on blood collection equipment.
  • Assist in the training of new staff and student interns.
  • Participate in continuing education and training programs to stay current on protocols.
  • Report any complications during procedures to the appropriate medical staff.
  • Assist with clerical duties related to patient records and documentation.
  • Comply with all regulatory requirements and safety standards.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  • Certification from a recognized phlebotomy or laboratory organization.
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Basic CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment and phlebotomy techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in performing tasks.
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols related to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and protocols.
  • Professionalism and a commitment to patient confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time effectively.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new practices and technologies.
  • Physical stamina to perform tasks requiring standing for long periods and the ability to lift moderate weights.
