Job Description

Wagalus School is seeking a creative dynamic and innovative Teacher/Principal for the 2025/2026 school year. This vibrant elementary school serves preschool to Grade 7 and it is located in the Fort Rupert Village on the northern coast of beautiful Vancouver Island. The school provides quality and relevant educational programs and services that weaves Kwakiutl culture and Kwakwala throughout the curriculum. Staff collaborate to meet the individual needs of students while preparing them to be successful in the 21st Century. The front of the school features a traditional big house that is the heart of the school which welcomes students staff and visitors to our learning environment. The Kwakiutl Band provides a competitive salary pension and a health and benefits program.

Job Summary:

As a senior member of the school the Teacher/Principal is responsible for providing leadership direction supervision and overall administration for the Wagalus Elementary School. The Principal is responsible for: a minimum of 50% teaching time implementing the BC Education curriculum; ensuring that the Kwakwala language and Kwakiutl culture are woven throughout the curriculum; implementing the Schools vision mission and philosophy; the instructional supervision and evaluation of school staff; and working closely and cooperatively with the Education Administrator staff and parents. In fulfilling this role the Principal is responsible for adhering to the BC School Act the Ministry of Education FNSA the Schools and Bands policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Education Leadership
  • Experience in senior leadership in a school setting
  • 3 years of teaching experience preferably in a First Nation school.
  • Good standing with the Teacher Regulation Branch and current BC Teaching Certificate
  • In-depth knowledge of the new BC Education curriculum
  • Knowledge of First Nation Schools
  • Knowledge of literacy and numeracy programs and best practices and familiarity with Readwell and Saxon Math programs
  • Knowledge of Acadience Assessment and CAT4 testing for analysis and implementation school-wide
  • Knowledge and experience using the DRUMS reporting system for BCTEA and Reciprocal Tuition an asset
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent organizational administrative and technology skills
  • Financial experience including forecasting proposal writing record keeping and audits (an asset)
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to foster a positive team environment
  • Experience teaching in an outdoor setting
  • Experience supporting the preschool language nest
  • Familiarity with posting hiring completing reference checking
  • Instruction supervision and e valuation of school staff
  • Following and adhering to Wagalus School policies and Kwakiutl
Band financial policies
  • Clear Criminal Record Check working with vulnerable populations
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.
The salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.
