Job Description

Job Purpose

The Bioprocessing Chemist I role at LGC offers an outstanding chance to join a dedicated team aiding in the efficient production and upkeep of our biomaterial supply. You will work together on manufacturing tasks as per a set schedule. Tasks involve managing inventory and creating solutions buffers and necessary materials for bioprocessing. Adhering to Good Manufacturing/Laboratory Practices (GMP or GLP) keeping organized records and guaranteeing product quality are key.

Reporting to the Bioprocessing Supervisor you will coordinate with other departments such as Production Planning. Your role will involve analysis and using scientific discretion within pre-established guidelines to make independent decisions about moderate to complex adjustments and calculations. You will employ general to moderately advanced laboratory equipment and techniques to perform tasks of varying complexity under both direct and indirect supervision. Routine analysis and interpretation of test results against established acceptance criteria will be key as will using your judgement to determine appropriate courses of action.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed according to GLP cGMP and QSR requirements.
  • Conduct protein purification using various methods including column chromatography following established procedures.
  • Apply tangential flow filtration for protein separation.
  • Prepare production and pilot reagents buffers and other solutions as per written procedures and protocols.
  • Operate basic and advanced laboratory equipment such as HPLC and AKTA systems proficiently.
  • Assist R&D with scale-up process optimization process validations and technology transfers for new product introductions.
  • Lead projects of moderate complexity aimed at process and product improvements.
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Test incoming raw materials.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 2 years of direct experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in a life science or physical science field closely related to protein chemistry.
  • Basic knowledge of different protein separation purification and characterization techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and interact effectively across the organization.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • 2 years of experience in a regulated environment (i.e. USDA/FDA/ISO13485).
  • Experience and ability to implement automated column separation systems and workflows.

  • May require prolonged sitting and working at a computer monitor. Repetitive motion using a keyboard or certain laboratory equipment for long periods. Occasionally required to lift and move material weighing up to 30 lbs.

  • Agreeable work environment typical of an open office setting with some exposure to noise from office machines.
