Description

The School of English is working alongside the Derbyshire Scouts to create and deliver engaging and informed activities on Viking Age culture and society. The project Vikings for Scouts aims to enrich and develop the work of the Derbyshire Scouts archaeology team by adapting existing activities used in the Vikings for Schools scheme for this new audience.


Start Date:19th July 2025
End Date:20th July 2025
Working Hours:16
Pay Rate: 14.87 per hour plus holiday pay
Location: Nottinghamshire
Dress Code: Casual

Student Ambassadors will prepare and deliver activities to groups of Scouts (aged between 10 and 18) as part of an Experimental Archaeology weekend at the Drum Hill Scout Camp in Derbyshire (19 and 20 July 2025). Activity plans will be provided but Ambassadors are encouraged to adapt these plans under the guidance of their Co-ordinator. We are recruiting 3 Student Ambassadors who will plan and deliver the sessions.

Planning:

  • Attending and participating in a briefing session led by the Co-ordinator
  • Planning fun informative and engaging workshops for Derbyshire Scouts
  • Ensuring knowledge of Viking Age culture is successfully communicated to children and young people
  • Ensuring activity plans are adapted to suit the needs of the teams assigned group including age and accessibility needs
  • Incorporating the equipment and costumes (re-enactment equipment artefacts etc.) into workshop plans (referring to the Equipment Safety Document and Conditions of Loan)
  • Signing out equipment by using the inventory travelling with items and using them appropriately (referring to the Equipment Safety Document and Conditions of Loan

Delivering:

  • Delivering engaging informed activities during the Experimental Archaeology weekend
  • Translating the academic interests of the CSVA to children and young people and responsibly represent the CSVA
  • To act as a positive role model for scouts and inspire them to develop their interest in the Vikings and to pursue further education
  • Taking appropriate safety precautions (especially when allowing children to handle dangerous/ precious equipment) (referring to the Equipment Safety Document and Conditions of Loan)
  • Fostering strong working links between the School of English (and University Of Nottingham as a whole) and Derbyshire Scouts
  • Feeding back to the Co-ordinator and/or PI and Co-I if any issues arise and keep them updated with progress

You must:

  • Be a current student at the University of Nottingham
  • Have previous experience of working on the Vikings for Schools programme
  • Understand safeguarding and child protection issues
  • Have high levels of spoken English
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
