The City & Borough of Juneau Engineering & Public Works Water Utility Division is looking for an individual to join their team!

This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidates qualifications. If hired at the lower level the successful applicant will be promoted to the higher level upon meeting the minimum qualifications for the higher level completing the training plan and demonstrating competency in the work as determined by the supervisor.


This position welcomes both entry/trainee level candidates and experienced certified water treatment operators. Candidates with minimal to no experience may qualify for an on-the-job training program while those with certification may qualify for reciprocity assistance. Supervisors/leads will define work assignments monitor progress and provide feedback with tasks becoming more advanced over time. Promotion eligibility is based on meeting minimum qualifications and specific criteria. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position involves shift work that includes days nights weekends holidays and being on-call. Additionally this position also requires recalls for emergencies and weather events. While the base of operations for this position is the Water Utility Shop there is a large amount of work required in multiple Treatment facilities across the community.

Typical Responsibilities

This position involves operating a surface water filtration plant and several groundwater wells in accordance with DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards. The Operator monitors water software controls & instrumentation and makes system adjustments as needed including chemical dosing pressure and flow adjustments. The Operator will also perform daily chemical cleaning procedures on filter system water quality sampling/testing facility/grounds maintenance as well as pump and motor trouble shooting and maintenance.

Water treatment operators maintain certification with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation in conjunction with a structured on-the-job training program. Operators become eligible for promotion as their DEC certification increases.

NOTE: This position will require shift work overtime call-outs work on Saturdays/Sundays/Holidays and odd shift hours. Once appropriately certified by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation the incumbent serves in regular on-call rotation with other water treatment operators spending one week at a time on-call.

Minimum Qualifications

Water Treatment Operator-In-Training I - Range 10: $22.08-$23.56 hourly (DOQ)

Education:
At time of application high school graduation or GED certificate are required.

Licenses:
At time of appointment a valid drivers license.

Certifications:
Within 6 months of appointment training and certification in CPR First Aid Confined Space and Rescue Forklift Operator and Respirator/Annual Fit-Test.

For continued employment the employee must obtain a Water Treatment Operator Provisional (P) Certificate issued by the ADEC within (1) year.


Water Treatment Operator-In TrainingII - Range 11: $23.56-$25.15 hourly (DOQ)
Education:
At time of application a high school graduation or GED certificate.

Licenses:
At time of appointment a valid drivers license.

Certifications:
A valid Water Treatment Operator Provisional (P) Certificate issued by the ADEC are required.

Within 6 months of appointment training and certification in CPR First Aid Confined Space and Rescue Forklift Operator and Respirator/Annual Fit-Test.

Within one (1) year of appointment asa Water Treatment Operator-in-Training II the employee must obtain a Water Treatment Operator Level I issued by ADEC.


Assistant Water Treatment Operator - Range 15: $30.64-$32.66 hourly (DOQ)

Education:
High school graduation or GED certificate.

Licenses:
At time of appointment a valid drivers license and within 6 months of appointment a valid Class A State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License valid for vehicles equipped with airbrakes. Both licenses are required for continued employment.

Certifications:
Within 6 months of appointment training and certification in CPR First Aid Confined Space and Rescue Forklift Operator and Respirator/Annual Fit-Test.

A valid Water Treatment Operator Level I Certificate issued by ADEC is required.

Within one (1) year of appointmentas an Assistant Water Treatment Operator the employee must obtain a Water Operator Level II Certificate issued by the ADEC.


Water Treatment Operator - Range 17: $34.87-$37.21 hourly (DOQ)

Education:
High school graduation or GED certificate.

Licenses:
At time of appointment a valid drivers license and within 6 months of appointment a valid Class A State of Alaska Commercial Drivers License valid for vehicles equipped with airbrakes. Both licenses are required for continued employment.

Certifications:
Within 6 months of appointment training and certification in CPR First Aid Confined Space and Rescue Forklift Operator and Respirator/Annual Fit-Test.

A valid Water Treatment Operator Level II Certificate issued by ADEC is required.
