Job Description

PURPOSE STATEMENT

This position is responsible for monitoring and supporting students during the school day to ensure a safe secure and comfortable environment conducive to student interaction and learning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Respond to calls pertaining to the safety and protection of district students staff and property.
  2. Provide guidance and instruction to students on consequences of their actions; discuss options and choices.
  3. Patrol campus during school hours including halls locker rooms grounds and parking lots and provide general supervision of pupils outside of class.
  4. Maintain alertness for problems likely to disrupt the educational process or to be injurious to persons or property.
  5. Correct or report conditions hazardous to the health and safety of pupils the public and staff.
  6. Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with administrators staff students and community.
  7. Adjust schedule to accommodate assignment to a variety of pupil activities.
  8. Assist pupils in resolving conflicts in a positive and constructive manner through the use of conflict resolution strategies and mediation techniques and participates in the training of pupils and staff in conflict resolution strategies and mediation techniques.
  9. Communicate with appropriate student age group requiring the use of both empathetic and disciplinary approaches.
  10. Assist administrators and staff in dealing with disruptive students.
  11. Collaboratively work with classroom teachers special education staff support staff and administration to best meet the needs of students.

  12. Instruct small groups or individual students in a variety of social skills learning activities.

  13. Conduct home visits and make necessary connections with parents of students in the SEL program.

  14. Assist staff with the development of behavior intervention plans and student contracts.

  15. Work as a member of a school-based team coordinating a variety of services for students and families.

  16. Coordinate and supervise in-school and/or after-school detention programs; support students in a variety of academic or social and emotional activities during related small programs.
  17. Assist administration and support staff in monitoring unexcused absences. Contact individual students regarding the school attendance policy.
  18. Assist with student supervision in areas designated by building administrator (ex: lunch supervision patrol duty ISS). Build relationships with students and parents during these designated times.
  19. Inform school and district administration of problems on or adjacent to campus involving students and non-students.
  20. Provide written documentation to school administration and/or office staff regarding events on the school campus.
  21. Build and maintain positive working relationships with students staff and outside agencies.
  22. Model appropriate and cooperative behavior including protecting confidential information consistent with district ethical guidelines.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  1. May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams.
  2. Perform related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Reports to the designated building administrator.

MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Required to deal with a wide range of student staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service oriented manner.
  • Confrontational situations require constant awareness and attention to personal safety.
  • Required to deal with distraught or difficult students parents or other individuals.
  • May be required to meet deadlines for submitting incident documentations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Required to stand for prolonged periods of time and have the mobility to canvas a large campus quickly.
  • Required to work outdoors in inclement weather.
  • Exposed to confrontational situations which may require restraint of students or adults.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Education training skills and experience to carry out the assignment. One or more years in a law enforcement field is preferred.
  • Training or experience in drug/alcohol abuse awareness prevention and control is preferred.
  • Experience working with students in an educational setting and/or an interest in supporting learning experiences. Previous experience working with youth or young adults is preferred.
  • Training or experience working with student mental health issues preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
  • Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff students and patrons of the district.
  • Excellent human relations communication and organizational skills; ability to communicate effectively with students staff and parents.
  • Must possess skills in positive behavior management and be able to manage student discipline in a non-confrontational manner.
  • Computer and record keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Required to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed education practices preferred.

Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation abuse injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
