SUMMARY
This is responsible technical work coordinating inspecting and leading contract employees performing line clearance herbicide application and other vegetation management work as deemed necessary. Work is also coordinated between property owners utility customers contract tree crews and many other divisions within and outside of Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU).
Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its emphasis on coordinating and leading line clearing herbicide and right-of-way/easement maintenance operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Coordinates with Utility Foresters to ensure contract crews perform work as indicated by maps generated by pre-inspectors.
Contacts property owners as needed to obtain access and/or permission to perform line clearance work in accordance with our standards and the customers wishes when possible
Communicates customer and utility approvals to crew supervisors.
Diplomatically gains permission for directional trim and/or removal of problem trees which may impede safe transmission of electrical service.
Works with entire vegetation management staff to give input on program scope direction and effectiveness.
Provides input on budget needs contractor crew requirements and contract development.
Supervises inspects and evaluates the work of line clearance and herbicide crews using established rating system. Ensures the utility is getting the most benefit for the monies spent performing line clearance activities.
Investigates customer complaints involving line clearance activities.
Plans organizes recommends and coordinates right-of-way maintenance activities with internal external and contractual personnel.
Assists in developing quotes for internal and external entities for vegetation work GRU performs in a contract role to other utilities and other entities.
Drives and operates heavy equipment such as backhoes tractors sprayers batwing mowers as well as bucket trucks and semi-trailers requiring a Class A CDL.
Required to be on standby as needed for electric system reliability
Will be required to respond under emergency conditions.
Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Reviews existing work practices and procedures to assist in implementing Continuous Improvement Practices (CIP) practices involving vegetation and right-of-way maintenance work.
May be required to transport mix handle or use hazardous materials (other than cans of gasoline batteries pumping fuel or access to normal janitorial cleaning materials) or may be responsible for facilities or equipment carrying current fluids or gas that could endanger the public or other employees.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education experience knowledge skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in forestry or arboriculture and five (5) years of experience in electric utility line clearance two (2) years of which shall be at the General Foreman level or above
or an equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.
Prior experience at the following levels of line clearance activities is preferred: Climber Climbing Crew Foreman and General Foreman.
CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES
Licenses
Valid Driver License required upon start date. Valid Florida Driver License required within thirty (30) days of start date.
Valid Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) required within six (6) months of start date.
Certifications
Valid State of Florida Commercial Applicator License Category 6 (ROW/Easements) within twelve (12) months of start date. Additional Categories may be added as work needs dictate. An example would be Aquatics.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of proper pruning methods and practices used in line clearance.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and accident prevention methods in assigned area of responsibility.
Knowledge of tree and brush removal as well as herbicide use.
Knowledge of local tree species and their growth characteristics.
Knowledge of tree diseases and tree pests commonly found in north Florida.
Ability to work effectively with landowners utility customers contractors coworkers and the general public.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential functions including the ability to lift kneel push pull and stoop while carrying a load of 50 pounds without assistance.
Work requires normal color vision to distinguish the color and severity of many control and safety devices.
Work requires use of personal protection equipment including hearing eye foot hand and head protection.
Work requires the ability to work at heights of over 100 feet on open grating from aerial lift devices and/or by traditional climbing methods.
Work requires the physical ability and dexterity to safely operate vehicles equipment and tools used in performance of job duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work may require exposure to hazardous conditions and noxious chemicals.
Work will require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
Work requires exposure to prolonged high noise levels.
Work will require performing work on non-level surfaces.
Work may require performing tasks in and around heavy traffic.
May be required to work outside regular business hours including nights weekends and holidays.
May be required to be available for twenty-four hour call out.
Will be required to respond during emergency operational conditions.
