JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Engagement the Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for community and student development in the universitys residence halls. The Area Coordinator (AC) provides leadership and supervision for up to 2 Graduate Assistants and up to 16 Resident Advisors in a residential area of approximately 600 students. The AC is responsible for creating a caring and inclusive environment for residents and staff members one defined by a genuine sense of belonging and memorable moments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provide leadership for a residential area of up to 600 students including supervision and evaluation of up to 2 Graduate Assistants (GAs) and up to 16 Resident Advisors (RAs);

  • Provide direct support and guidance to residents through programming mentoring and referral designed to encourage the academic emotional and social development of each student;

  • Coordinate the development of programs in the residential area by working with GAs and RAs to create high-quality educational and impactful programs; oversee programming budget and track programmatic efforts for area;

  • Conduct ongoing weekly student supervisory meetings and student staff meetings; attend weekly supervisory and Professional Staff meetings;

  • Participate in the after-hours on-call duty rotation throughout the year;

  • Serve as a hearing officer in the student conduct process;

  • Dedicate time to meeting individually with residents who need assistance support or mediation;

  • Participate in annual department processes such as opening and closing the residence halls and facilitating inspections of student rooms and buildings to maintain appropriate standards of health safety and maintenance;

  • Assist in the implementation and assessment of Residence Life programs processes and initiatives;

  • Collaborate with Professional Staff members in the recruitment selection training and evaluation of professional graduate and student staff members;

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a representative of the Residence Life department on division and university-wide committees;

  • Collaborate with other university offices such as Facilities C&W (Custodial) Public Safety Student Engagement and Leadership Student Financial Services Dining Office of Accessibility Services Center for Global Education Spiritual Life and Athletics;

  • Participate in presentations and panel discussions for Admissions events;

  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree required;

  • One to three years of related experience;

  • Supervision of residence hall staff or other staff members in college or university residence halls;

  • Demonstrated commitment to student development persistence and success;

  • Ability to interact effectively with students staff and campus partners from diverse backgrounds;

  • Understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice and inclusion;

  • Knowledge of quality customer service practices and specifically how to successfully address student and parent concerns;

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) interpersonal skills and attention to detail;

  • Demonstrated understanding of the educational environment at a diverse private urban institution;

  • Experience addressing individual student and community behavioral matters;

  • Ability to think critically and effectively plan and organize work;

  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment and discretion in establishing and maintaining good working relationships;

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word Excel and Outlook;

  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to service excellence embodying Simmons core values mission and vision in every aspect of the role working with students faculty staff and visitors;

  • A positive and professional demeanor is expected;

  • Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in College Student Personnel Higher Education Counseling or a related field;

  • A minimum of 1 year of graduate or postgraduate Residence Life experience;

  • Knowledge of StarRez or other similar housing database software programs;

  • Knowledge of Maxient or other conduct database software programs;

  • Experience working directly with Living-Learning Communities or Theme Floors and/or building faculty partnerships;

  • Experience enhancing students academic achievement through collaborative efforts or programmatic development;

  • Demonstrated commitment to student development and educational programming including but not limited to: advising student groups providing leadership training and ongoing development. Current membership and/or active involvement in related professional organizations such as ACPA NASPA or ACUHO-I;

  • Experience serving as a hearing officer for student conduct/judicial cases.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • On-campus or hybrid eligibility up to one day of remote

  • Frequent kneeling crouching pushing pulling walking climbing flights of stairs and standing; occasional reaching above and below desk level

  • Frequent lifting/carrying of papers files equipment and material weighing up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting up to 25 pounds

  • Frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequent grasping to handle individual papers write and take notes and feel individual objects

  • Occasionally required to work weekends and nights. Required to be on-call as a regular part of the job

  • Emergency staff designation
