Job Summary: The 2nd Grade Discretionary Aide provides essential support to 2nd-grade teachers and students at Southwest Elementary. This role involves assisting with various classroom activities providing individualized or small-group student support preparing instructional materials and performing other duties as assigned to ensure a positive and effective learning environment. The discretionary nature of this position means responsibilities may vary based on the evolving needs of the classroom and students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Student Support:
- Work with individual students or small groups on specific academic tasks as directed by the teacher (e.g. reading practice math drills vocabulary review).
- Provide re-teaching and reinforcement of concepts for students needing additional support.
- Assist students with special needs under the guidance of the teacher or special education staff.
- Help supervise students during classroom activities transitions lunch recess and other school events.
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.
- Assist with student behavior management strategies as directed by the teacher.
- Classroom Assistance:
- Prepare and organize instructional materials such as copying worksheets creating bulletin boards setting up learning centers and preparing art supplies.
- Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment.
- Assist teachers with classroom management tasks and routines.
- Support the teacher in implementing daily lesson plans.
- Proctor tests or quizzes under teacher supervision.
- Administrative Support:
- Assist with data collection (e.g. tracking student progress recording observations).
- Help with clerical tasks as needed such as filing organizing student work and distributing materials.
- Escort students within the school building as necessary.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Communicate effectively and professionally with teachers staff students and parents (as directed by the teacher).
- Collaborate with the 2nd-grade team to support student learning and classroom operations.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
- Professionalism:
- Adhere to all school and district policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Be punctual and maintain a consistent attendance record.
- Participate in professional development opportunities as required.
