Summary
The Coordinator of Religious Education will design and implement the religious education program. S/He will develop and oversee a comprehensive plan of religious education/formation and oversee the sacramental preparation of OCIA OCIC adult faith formation Baptism First Reconciliation First Communion and Confirmation. The REC will also recruit and monitor catechists select appropriate materials and promote the total faith formation mission of the parish.
The Youth Ministry program comprises a Youth Group the formation of a Middle School group and High School group. The Youth Ministers primary responsibility is to minister to youth in relationship with Jesus Christ and empower them to grow and mature their faith. This person is responsible for middle school and high school youth.
Responsibilities
Budgeting and purchasing
- Ensure adherence to the religious education budget
- Set program fees
- Prepare program purchase orders
Recruiting and Monitoring Catechists
- Assess number of catechists needed for religious education program
- Advertising and recruiting of catechists
- Conduct regular meetings for ongoing formation of catechists
- Ensure that catechist complete and maintain ARCHSA Safe Environment requirements. This includes completion of a Criminal Background Check signing the Code of Conduct Ministering to Minors Policy VIRTUS Training that includes Protecting Gods Children Vulnerable Adult Training and Sexual Harassment Training.
Curriculum Design
- Develop a holistic program of catechetical formation
- Assess the different levels and needs of those in the catechetical program
- Be current and up-to-date on the teachings and doctrines of the church
Conduct Annual Religious Education Program
- Observe catechetical volunteer performances and confer individually with each member to assist with their ongoing formation and growth
- Set program schedule
- Register participants and collect fees
- Maintain attendance records of both participants and catechetical volunteers
- Assess catechetical needs of parish and set priorities goals and objectives with approval of the Pastor
- All extracurricular activities such as meetings with parents for sacramental preparation and retreats before announcing must be planned well in advance
- Develop and maintain data entry for students and catechists
- Develop a calendar for the year by August 1st
Oversee Sacramental Preparation Program
- Prepare the proper documentation required for inputting information in sacramental books
- Sacramental preparation includes Baptism First Reconciliation First Communion Confirmation and Order of Christian Initiation for Adults and Children.

Additional Requirements
- Must complete ARCHSA Safe Environment Training. This includes completion of a Criminal Background Check Code of Conduct and Ministering to Minors Policy

Responsibilities for Youth
- Be available to youth to foster their personal and spiritual development
- Communicate and collaborate with parents and families to foster a holistic faith experience
- Organize the annual Teen ACTS retreat
- Organize and execute service opportunities
- Accompany youth to summer programs in and out of state
- Actively engage in social media
- Ensure volunteers and VIRTUS compliant and routinely meet with them
- Promote attendance at Archdiocese of San Antonio programs/events
- Offer some RE classes in modules for High School aged youth
- Attend staff meetings
- Other tasks as assigned
Other areas in need of most development
- Liturgy - The YM will assist in helping the pastor with liturgical issues
- Community Engagement - by offering support to those groups building community
Work Environment
- Works hours as assigned by the Pastor (Monday through Sunday)
- Flexibility to work weekends and annual events as needed
Minimum Qualifications
- Active member of a Roman Catholic parish faith community. The REC and YM needs to be a person who is knowledgeable and faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church as witnessed by the life s/he lives.
- Experience in religious education is required. Undergraduate work in Theology Catechesis or extensive parish experience is prefered. Experience of Youth Ministry and keen interest in working directly with small groups of youth and young adults.
- Three years of parish and/or administrative office experience
- Proven experience with Microsoft Office (Word Excel and Powerpoint) and Adobe Acrobat
- Ability to communicate with various levels of staff and management and to work cooperatively with the Pastor parish staff deanery and volunteers.
- Demonstrate effective teaching skills at age-appropriate levels using different learning styles mentoring and counseling youth.
- Be and initiative-taker and work in start-up situations.
- Be a team builder and team member.
- Ability to work evenings weekends and holidays due to work an unpredictable schedule when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to compose correspondence minutes and/or reports.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
