Job Description

Position Title: Controller
Supported by: Vice President of Business Operations
FLSA Status: Exempt Full-Time

In Short:
The Controller will be responsible for all aspects of the Accounting and Finance Department oversight. This position will provide leadership for the Month End Close process creation of the Monthly Budget to Actual Report and generating the Financial Statements for the Finance Committee. This role will be responsible for the management of all governmental compliance reporting along with compliance with all federal passthrough awards.

Your Mission:
  • Responsible for day-to-day supervision for all the accounting functions including the training and supervision for the Senior Financial Accountant and Financial Accountant the maintenance of the general ledger system and the monitoring of all internal controls and compliance with accounting policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to drive transformative enduring change across the organization by influencing strategic decisions and empowering others to advance the vision and mission meaningfully.
  • Ensure systems and processes are developed to ensure appropriate internal controls and compliance with non-profit accounting US GAAP legal governmental and tax requirements are in place.
  • Manage the month-end close process insuring the timely and accurate creation of the Monthly Budget to Actual Report and related Variance Analysis the generation of the Financial Statements for the Finance Committee and ensuring compliance with GAAP and regulatory compliance.
  • Support the Vice President of Business Operations efforts on engaging the Finance Committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Perform and review reconciliations of all key Balance Sheet accounts including Inventory valuation along with the review and approval of journal entries for the respective accounts.
  • Track monitor and manage all restrictions on donations receivables promises to pay federal passthrough awards and others to include the accurate allocation of costs as per grant guidelines and for preparing the Net Asset roll forward schedule.
  • Maintain a file of all government contracts for federal passthrough awards and managing the government compliance reporting for federal and states programs including the federal passthrough awards.
  • Provide financial reporting support for Grant funding proposal budgets.
  • Prepare for and manage the annual Financial Audit and Single Audit of Federal Passthrough Awards ensuring completion in a timely manner and without findings.
  • Ensure that Form 990 and State tax filings are completed timely and accurately.
  • Assist with the annual fiscal year departmental and program budgeting process including the monitoring of timelines for completion.
  • Responsible for managing and coordinating insurance policy renewals to ensure continuous and adequate coverage.
  • Other duties that are entrusted within your scope of practice.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Commitment to the FBFH mission and values

  • Ability to analyze financial data develop reports and make decisions based on data and forecasting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills and strong business acumen.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to achieve deadlines.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects with attention to detail and accuracy while adhering to deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products high level Excel skills and experience with accounting software such as NetSuites etc.
  • Proven track record of directing successful accounting operations.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently as well as in a team-based environment.
  • Maintain positive working relationship with supervisor co-workers and other departmental staff.
Your Story:
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in accounting or finance including at least three (3) years in a managerial capacity required.
  • Bachelors degree in accounting or finance is required. Masters degree is preferred.
  • Non-profit accounting and Government Auditing Standards experience strongly preferred.
  • Public Accounting experience and CPA preferred.
  • Experience coordinating audit activities supporting Grant reporting budget development and analysis and not-for-profit Balance Sheet reconciliations preferred.
  • Lived experience with the impacts of systemic racism or marginalization is a plus.
