The Team
Employment and Assistance Workers (EAWs) are an essential part of the Service Delivery Division within the Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction responsible for providing income and disability supports and services to individuals across British Columbia. EAWs may provide assistance directly in-person through the Community Services Branch or via phone and virtual channels through the Virtual Services Branch.

The Role
EAWs work within a busy client service environment organizing their workload and setting priorities to meet performance targets. Skilled at gathering information EAWs connect with people who may be in crisis to accurately assess eligibility for supports and services. EAWs must also maintain compassion composure and clarity during difficult conversations to effectively communicate impactful decisions to the people they serve.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Secondary School graduation or equivalent (GED).
  • One (1) or more years experience delivering a high standard of client service in a high volume fast paced rapidly changing environment (in-person via virtual technologies or over the telephone).
  • One (1) or more years experience working with various computer applications including MS Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Experience providing services to clients experiencing poverty substance use or mental health issues.

Provisos

  • Must be willing and able to display resilience in the face of adversity and demonstrate empathy interacting with citizens.
  • Must be willing and able to use de-escalation techniques to manage some situations.

About this Position:

Applicants will be screened against basic eligibility criteria as well as education and experience requirements. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete online testing.
Candidates passing the online testing will be placed into an Applicant Inventory. Over the course of several months location selection invitations will be distributed to inventory members in stages. After responding to a location selection invitation applicants will schedule a virtual interview. Applicants only interview once with the resulting score applied to any locations in which they express interest.
Successful applicants will be placed on
eligibility lists for their selected locations. As vacancies arise over the course of 2025/2026 job offers will be made from the eligibility list in rank order until its expiry. All appointments to the BC Public Service require the satisfactory completion of Past Work Performance Checks. Being placed on an eligibility list does not guarantee a job offer.
Some positions may have flexible work options available subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established for future temporary and/or permanent vacancies in only the locations explicitly stated on the posting.
