  • Watch Manager B Operational Support Officer (OSO) / 42672 - 46707 in accordance with NJC pay scales
  • 42 hours per week with expectation to support On-Call Drill nights as requested by the district Group Manager
  • Permanent

This position is open to current Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) staff only.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Serviceis seeking three exceptional leaders to join our team as a District-based Watch Manager Operational Support Officer (OSO).

In this role you will contribute to the training and assessment of District staff and the management of risk within each of the three Districts North South and West.

Your role and responsibilities

As Watch Manager Operational Support Officer you will work as part of a District Management Team responsible for delivering risk management training and assessment in line with the requirements of the District Plan.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Providing operational cover during positive hours within the District as required coordinating with the County Day Crewing (CDC) manager.
  • Managing and maintaining aspects of His Majestys Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) reports areas for improvement that are highlighted for operational teams delegated by the district Group manager.
  • Reviewing of Performance Measures for stations within their district.
  • Performing thematic/focussed reviews for operational teams coordinated between response and risk and resilience.
  • Coordinating with the Organisational Assurance Manager to conduct station audits within their district at regular intervals.
  • Coordinating with the Resilience Officer to conduct an operational risk inspection (level 3 medium) within the district at regular intervals.
  • Quality assuring practical sessions for Whole-time and On-Call crews as required.
  • Supporting the structured debrief process coordinated by the organisational assurance manager.
  • Supporting the coordination of any station/operational specific actions fed down by operational change or Health Safety and Wellbeing committee.
  • Auditing of Safety flashes and action notes as well as training competencies ensuring all actions are completed within the prescribed period.
  • Supporting the On-Call Recruitment process at various points throughout.

You will need

  • To be suitably qualified for a Watch Manager Role in Suffolk Fire & Rescue as per the Service Progression Document.
  • To be qualified as a Level 1 Incident Commander.
  • To be self-motivated and able to use their own initiative to make effective decisions.
  • To have the ability to manage your own workload without direct supervision and deliver work to meet deadlines.
  • The ability to work effectively within a team.
  • The ability to work flexibly including some evening working.
  • To be able to demonstrate experience of responding to a variety of different Incident types as a Level 1 Commander.
  • The ability to use a range of IT skills (including Word Excel and PowerPoint).
  • The ability to support the continuous improvement through new ideas.
  • The ability to motivate mentor and model positive team behaviours.
  • Resilience and proactive approach to challenges.

The District Command Teams in Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service focus on supporting and empowering our Operational Crews both On-Call and Whole-time to responding swiftly safely and effectively to emergencies. In addition to reacting to emergencies our crews work tirelessly to improve safety in Suffolk. We support them to engage with both residential and business communities focussing on prevention and protection measures and managing local risk.
