Job Description

Position Summary:

The Senior Executive Officer (SEO) of Development serves as a key steward of the organization responsible for developing implementing and managing fundraising strategies that uphold The Arcs enduring commitment to advocate for and serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The SEO will lead a team of development professionals in all fundraising initiatives for The Arc and The Arc of the US Foundation. This role involves creating and executing a comprehensive growth strategy and fundraising plans to attract both private and public philanthropic support to further The Arcs mission.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in crafting and executing innovative fundraising strategies along with exceptional relationship management decision-making and leadership skills. We are looking for individuals who excel in fast-paced environments are proactive and can identify opportunities even in challenging situations. This position reports directly to the CEO of The Arc and is based in the Washington DC metro area.

Job Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the SEO of Development include:

  • Establishing a comprehensive development strategy for the organization.
  • Leading the development of strategies and tactics while enhancing The Arcs fundraising and development capabilities.
  • Representing The Arc externally passionately communicating our mission vision goals and strategies.
  • Collaborating with senior leaders to create a plan focused on increasing unrestricted revenue for the organization.
  • Identifying cultivating and managing relationships with institutional donors including corporations foundations and government agencies to secure both restricted and unrestricted support.
  • Developing a sustainable pipeline for major gifts and expanding staff capacity to nurture this revenue stream.
  • Overseeing the creation of annual budgets and work plans including revenue and expense projections and evaluation metrics.
  • Mentoring and managing a team of development and fundraising professionals focusing on performance management retention and hiring.
  • Actively supporting the CEO in engaging with donors at critical points in relationship building and stewardship.

Qualifications:

  • Proven success in creating and implementing a comprehensive development strategy across various channels with analytics to measure program effectiveness.
  • Experience in identifying cultivating and soliciting major donors as well as corporate foundation and government funders.
  • Ability to write compelling appeal letters case statements grant proposals sponsor prospectuses and other fundraising communications.
  • Familiarity with customer relationship management and fundraising software systems particularly Salesforce Nonprofit Success Pack and related data analytics.
  • Bachelors degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 15 years of professional experience including five years in management and two or more years in a senior leadership role.
  • Creative and entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Strategic and adaptable leadership style with strong relationship management and customer service skills.
  • Excellent writing skills are essential.
  • Exceptional initiative vision and ambition to lead a critical function within the organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects tasks and deadlines effectively.
  • Experience in budget preparation and management.
  • Strong organizational skills highly driven and results-oriented.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse constituencies including board members staff donors and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated success in leading motivating and mentoring a team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Collaborative and authentic leadership style with the ability to work effectively with senior staff and volunteers.
  • Familiarity with the life circumstances of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their family caregivers is preferred.
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to advancing the civil rights of people with disabilities and other marginalized communities is strongly preferred.

This is an at-will full time employment position. Competitive salary based on education and experience base salary range of $140000 - $165000. Comprehensive benefits package that includes health and dental insurance 403(b) employer contribution accrued vacation and sick leave and more. Flexible work environment that includes hybrid options for working in the office and working from home. Majority of work is completed on a computer and in meetings (in-person and virtual).

About The Arc:

The Arc is the largest national community-based organization working with and for people with IDD and their families. The Arc supports people with IDD of all ages and varying support needs including individuals with autism Down syndrome Fragile X syndrome Intellectual Disability Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and various other developmental disabilities.


Many of The Arcs state and local chapters are engaged in both public policy advocacy and individual advocacy to assist people with IDD to get the services and supports they need. Our chapters also provide a wide array of services and supports for people with IDD and their families. This varies by chapter and includes but is not limited to education employment residential services day programs personal care peer support self-advocacy training person-centered and future planning recreational activities and other supports that meet the unique needs of people with IDD in each community.
