ICU Registrar Job Description
Overview
The ICU Registrar plays a pivotal role in the Intensive Care Unit responsible for overseeing and managing critically ill patients who require close monitoring and intensive medical care. This role is essential in ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to patients facing life-threatening conditions. The ICU Registrar works under the supervision of senior medical staff and is expected to follow clinical protocols while responding to emergencies. Candidates with a Diploma in Anaesthesia and Post Graduate Diploma in Critical Care (PGDCC) Emergency Medicine are highly preferred as these qualifications equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide timely and effective interventions. The successful candidate will engage in direct patient care collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and play a significant role in the education and training of junior medical staff. In this demanding environment the ability to think critically manage crises efficiently and communicate effectively is paramount to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough assessments of critically ill patients.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans for patients in the ICU.
- Administer medications and intravenous therapies as prescribed.
- Perform necessary medical procedures and interventions including intubation and central line placement.
- Monitor vital signs and interpret diagnostic tests making adjustments to treatment as required.
- Collaborate with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and provide life-saving interventions.
- Participate in daily rounds with senior medical staff to discuss patient status and progress.
- Document patient care activities accurately in medical records.
- Educate medical students and junior residents on critical care practices.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in critical care medicine.
- Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives within the ICU.
- Assist in the planning and coordination of patient transfers to other units or facilities.
- Ensure compliance with infection control protocols and hospital policies.
- Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss complex cases and treatment options.
Required Qualifications
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Diploma in Anaesthesia is preferred.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Critical Care Emergency Medicine (PGDCC) is highly preferred.
- At least 2 years of experience working in an intensive care unit or similar setting.
- Current medical licensure to practice in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Strong knowledge of critical care protocols and procedures.
- Experience with advanced monitoring equipment and life-support systems.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Willingness to participate in continuous professional development and training.
- Commitment to providing high-quality patient care.
- Compassionate approach to patient and family interactions.
