The City of Oxnards Wastewater Department is seeking a Wastewater Collections Operator Trainee.Under general supervision performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties assigned to classes in the Wastewater Collection Operator series including maintenance and repair of the wastewater and stormwater collection systems and flood control facilities and systems; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
WHAT YOULL DO:
Swamping on a combination truck
Assist with cleaning the wastewater collection system
Setting up traffic control
Participate in the inspection maintenance and operation of a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment
Weed abatement on earthen channel
Catch basin culvert and storm drain cleaning
Will be required to be on standby (on Call) also work in wet weather
Performs a variety of maintenance tasks and operates various motorized and mechanized equipment incidental to the duties of maintaining and effective wastewater system for the City.
Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed
Participate in maintenance for wastewater collection storm water and flood control facilities;
Opening and closing wastewater lines when necessary;
Assist with operating and maintaining line inspection and video equipment to survey open and repair lines
Performing concrete and other repairs;
Removing debris and cleaning catch basins beaches and ditches;
Posting traffic control signs in work area when flooding occurs.
As needed assist plant operations staff to bypass operations and cleaning operations in wells traps lines etc.
Other related duties as assigned
SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives close supervision and specific direction regarding assignments and deadlines.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification is distinguished from the Plant Operator in that it functions in a training capacity prior to obtaining a Grade I Operator certification and performs minor preventative equipment maintenance tasks.
WORK SCHEDULE:The normal work week is Monday through Thursday 6:30 am to 4:00 pm and alternating Fridays 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. Depending on the area of assignment staff may be assigned to a shift that is outside the standard work hours. This position may be required to be available for additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. This position is governed by overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are theminimumqualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of maintenance experience preferably in the performance of utility tasks.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Valid California Class C Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record.
Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) within18months from date of hire
Highly Desirable:
Class B California drivers license
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to speak and understand English to effectively communicate with fellow employees customers and vendors

NOTE:For most positions the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Regular and reliable attendance effective communication skills and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
Employees are required to participate in the Citys direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi weekly basis.
This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
