Job Description

Job Title: GIS Technician

Summary

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician is a seasonal contract position with the potential for extension based on available funding. A key role will be to assist with the development and maintenance of a geospatial database associated non-spatial databases and metadata that will be used to inform Keewaytinook Okimakanaks community priorities and biodiversity research projects. This position reports to the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Services Manager and will focus on database management conducting spatial analyses and producing mapping deliverables to help guide land use planning mineral exploration and emergency management for KOs strategic vision. The position will be based out of Thunder Bay. Responsibilities would include:

  • Compiling geographic information in the form of satellite images geographical surveys and aerial photographs
  • Entering new data into the GIS database
  • Drawing maps using advanced computer software
  • Ensuring maps are annotated and compiled with the correct information
  • Compiling reports using all available GIS and GPS data sources
  • Maintaining the GIS database and troubleshooting data issues
  • Assessing current geospatial database to identify gaps or improvements
  • Mapping data collected during field work
  • Creating dashboards and infographics to deliver complex data in a user-friendly format
  • Occasional field work may be required depending on project needs

Job Duties

  • Use geospatial tools to address specific issues in areas like land use planning environmental monitoring or emergency management
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows automate processes and introduce new technologies
  • Creating and managing interactive web maps including features like story maps dashboards and dashboards
  • Produce high-quality spatial deliverables via analysis and modeling of large datasets in a GIS environment
  • Support multiple concurrent projects including all project stages from planning and design to delivery training and documentation
  • Be familiar with resource development project plans in the First Nations homelands
  • Work with project managers to create proof maintain and document complex databases to support analytical operations
  • Assist with proposals budgets and project plans

Requirements

  • Familiarity and experience with GIS (preferably QGIS and open-source software)
  • Knowledge and experience working with remote First Nations
  • Understanding of Integrated GPS and GIS principles
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of the organization
  • Familiar with environmental science and natural heritage
  • Computer literacy including effective working skills of MS Word Excel PowerPoint and e-mail required
  • Superior time management skills multitasking skills and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision

Working Conditions

  • Travel may be required.
  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Lifting or moving up to 30lbs may be required.
  • Working with community leadership members and KO partners.

Employment Type: Seasonal Contract position/Temporary full-time
