Description

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular full-time position in the class of Paralegal at the District Attorneys Office.

ABOUT THE POSITION
This Paralegal position works in the Criminal Division under the direction and supervision of a licensed attorney and is responsible for performing legal research and other legal services requiring a paraprofessional understanding of the law and legal procedures. Duties include but are not limited to gathering and analyzing statutes decisions legal articles codes and documents; preparingfor proceedings and/or trial; assistingwith drafting agreements; and filingexhibits briefs appeals pleadings and other legal documents with the court opposing counsel or other agencies. Theideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of traditional court diversion collaborative court and restorative justice processes relevant public safety concerns and behavioral health assessment criteria. They will demonstrate proficiency in maintaining effective working relationships with justice partners and stakeholders. Personal qualities of the ideal candidate will include strong interpersonal problem-solving and organizational skills attention to detail; self-motivation reliability and a strong work ethic; and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Essential Functions

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Investigates gathers and analyzes facts and law of cases and searches pertinent sources such as public records to determine causes of action and prepare cases.
  • Prepares for proceedings and/or trial by gathering maintaining and arranging legal documents for attorney review writing reports and organizing exhibits; maintains litigation files and provides ongoing case and file management.
  • Assists attorney with pre-trial litigation jury selection and support during trial; meets with clients and other professionals to discuss details of legal cases; coordinates service of subpoenas; and schedules witnesses to testify at hearings.
  • Drafts and prepares complaints answers writs notices subpoenas briefs pleadings appeals and other legal correspondence/documents.
  • Files exhibits briefs appeals pleadings and other legal documents with the court opposing counsel or other agencies as appropriate.
  • Obtains and prepares affidavits and other formal statements that may be used as evidence in court.

Employment Standards

Education/Certification:Any one of the following options is qualifying:

a) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association.
b) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at or a degree from a postsecondary institution that requires the successful
completion of a minimum of 24 semester or equivalent units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

c) A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject a minimum of one year of law-related experience under thesupervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.

Special Requirements: Incumbents in this class are required to fulfill the mandatory continuing education requirements as defined by the California Business and Professions Code section 6450 (d).

License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California drivers license class C or higher to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.
