The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 4 (Research Coordinator) located in Douglas Alaska!


What you will be doing:

Under the general direction of a Fish and Game Coordinator the Research Coordinator is responsible for oversight and supervision of the wildlife research program in region 1 (Southeast Alaska) including:

  • Leadership of the research program and supervision of research staff
  • Assurance of scientific quality and integrity of projects of publications and
  • Management of the research program budget including compliance with the Pittman-Robertson Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration program requirements.

The Research Coordinator along with the Regional Supervisor and Management Coordinator serve as the regional leadership team and together supervise over thirty professional technical and administrative positions setting staffing and budget priorities relative to the management and conservation needs of wildlife populations in Southeast Alaska.

The working conditions you can expect:

The Research Coordinator position will be based in the Douglas Island Building - 3 miles from downtown Juneau. As ADF&Gs regional office this location houses office and laboratory space for Region Is research management and administrative staff. It is also shared by other departments and divisions and is organized with an open office layout to promote collaboration and position may be suitable for partial telework after a probationary period depending on the needs of the incumbent and leadership team. The Research Coordinator will travel for meetings to Anchorage Fairbanks and small communities throughout Region I and occasionally for fieldwork throughout the rugged mountainous landscape and temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska.

  • Requires routine travel to attend board meetings workshops area office and field site visits.

Must be able to obtain and maintain:

  • Wildlife Chemical Immobilization Certification (Controlled Substance Act; US Code Title 21; CFR 1300)
  • Wildlife Capture and Handling Certification (Animal Welfare Act; Title 7 chapter 54 section 2131-2157; CFR Title 9 chapter 1)
  • CPR and First Aid training

We are looking for an energetic and committed professional who has:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead supervise and mentor mid-career professional biologists.
  • Demonstrated ability to design plan budget and implement complex research programs which collect biological information to promote sound and practical wildlife management.
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of wildlife biology. Skills should include a solid foundation in the concepts principles and theories of wildlife including population dynamics distribution habitat requirements life histories reproduction behavior and conservation.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills coupled with experience in Pittman-Robertson federal aid program requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly present biological data and analytical results both oral and written to multiple audiences including scientific peers the general public and the Alaska Board of Game.

Special Note:

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry or natural resource management;
AND
One year of advanced professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 3 Wildlife Biologist 3 Habitat Biologist 3 or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques human population dynamics or the design and manipulation of landscapes) of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry physics mathematics statistics geology hydrology or GIS.

Special Note:
Upper division courses means courses that are specialized in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving analytical thinking skills and theoretical applications with depth and rigor in a disciplines theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics microscopic analysis underwater research or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
