Position Summary:

The Virginia Council on Economic Education seeks a highly motivated and qualified Director of Development.

The Director of Development is responsible for planning implementing and growing a comprehensive development and fundraising program that supports the short and long term financial sustainability of VCEE. This includes annual and major giving donor cultivation and stewardship grant writing corporate and foundation engagement and fundraising events. The Director will lead fundraising strategy manage development operations and collaborate closely with the President & CEO Board of Directors VCEE leadership team and university-based Centers for Economic Education.

This role offers the opportunity to shape a growing development program that advances economic and financial education for hundreds of thousands of students across Virginia each year.

Please note: This position solely reports to the Virginia Council on Economic Education and is not associated in any way with the VCU Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Fundraising & Program Development
    • Develop and execute fundraising strategies aligned with organizational goals and mission.
    • Establish annual and long-term revenue goals; monitor performance against benchmarks.
    • Identify cultivate solicit and steward individual corporate and foundation donors.
    • Oversee all aspects of donor stewardship and recognition ensuring timely communication and reporting of impact.
  • Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement
    • Collaborate with the President & CEO to support Board development efforts and fundraising engagement.
    • Develop and implement stakeholder engagement strategies to enhance community ties.
    • Plan and execute events for donors educators and business leaders that elevate VCEEs visibility and mission.
    • Produce compelling communications and collateral for fundraising campaigns and initiatives in partnership with the Sr. Director of Community Advocacy & Outreach.
  • Grants & Donor Relations
    • Research and pursue grant opportunities from foundations corporations and government entities independently and in collaboration with contracted consultants.
    • Write and submit grant applications and required reporting materials independently and in collaboration with contracted consultants.
    • Maintain accurate donor records and reports in the CRM system; track pledges gifts and donor communications.
  • Work on special projects and initiatives as needed to support the School of Business


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in communications marketing or related field or an equivalent combination of knowledge skills and experience;Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies donor cultivation and nonprofit development principles.

  • Excellent written verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Google Workspace and donor management systems (e.g. DonorPerfect Neon).

  • Ability to travel occasionally for donor meetings and special events including some evenings or weekends.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of successful experience in nonprofit development office administration in the area of annual giving stewardship and donor relations

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in fundraising over $1M annually preferably in education nonprofit or university settings.

  • Familiarity with tax planning principles donor advised funds and charitable giving practices preferred.

Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday 40 hours per week and may require periodic weekend and evening hours. This position is in-person at the VCU School of Business in Richmond VA.
