Job Description

TITLE:Lead Sign Language Interpreter

POSTION TYPE:SPEC

HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:


Required:

  1. Hold a permanent interpreter license issued by the state of Iowa.
  2. Completion of a two- or four-year interpreter training program (A.A. B.A. A.A.S. B.S.); orin the process of achieving; or apossible waiverfor BA in another area
  3. RID Certification and/or EIPA score of 4.0 or above.
  4. Minimum of 5 years classroom and/or community interpreting experience.
  5. Proficient and fluent in ASL and English.

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

  1. Ability todemonstrateproficiencywith ASL to English. I.e. fluent voicing for Deaf clients.
  2. Knowledge of DMPS Communication Policy.
  3. Knowledge ofeducational interpreting and the role of the educational interpreter as related to the IEP.
  4. Knowledge of procedures functions and limitations of assigned interpreter duties.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Coordinatingsupporting and leadingsign language interpreters with the spoken word into the language of signs at a fluent rate using ASL and ASL in spoken English Word Order.Responsible forcoordinating and supporting sign language interpreters which mayincludecoordinating coverage for interpreters when absent scheduling and prioritizing interpreter duties coordinating evaluations and professional learning and providing interpreting services as a substitute or for other Des Moines Public School related reasons.This position requires independent judgment.The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the student and family services department.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Coordinate coverage for interpreters when absent.
  2. Coordinate and provide interpreting services for deaf staff members.
  3. Work with community interpreters or agencies to provide services when appropriate.
  4. Contact the substitute office to coordinate substitutes.
  5. Substitute for absent interpreters.
  6. Coordinate evaluations and in-services training for interpreters.
  7. Mentor new interpreters and others as needed.
  8. Conduct walk-throughs or informal observations of interpreters and give improvement feedback on a regular basis regarding technical interpreting skills.
  9. Keep interpreters informed on law licensing and professional development opportunities.
  10. Coordinate after-hour interpreting services including parent teacher conferences.
  11. Coordinate interpreting for Deaf parents or guardians.
  12. Observe and problem solve with interpreters upon request.
  13. Collaborate with Iowa School for the Deaf outreach regarding professional development for interpreters.
  14. Serve as liaison to promote good public relations between hearing and deaf staff and students within the program and school buildings.
  15. Attend meetings and IEPs meetings when appropriate to address communication needs and classroom observations of specific students regarding interpreting.
  16. Provide interpreting services for summer activities.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):

  1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  2. Maintain confidentiality.
  3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public students and other employees.
  4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned

FT/PT:Full Time DAYS:195 days HOURS:8.0 Hour Day

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Walking Standing Sitting with occassional bending/stooping reaching/pulling/pushing climbing stairs and driving. Carrying 10 feet and Lifting 25 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:Mostly indoors with occasional outdoor conditions.
