Planning and Public Works (PPW) has an exciting opportunity at the Senior Planner level to serve as a land use and housing lead as part of our long-range planning team. We are seeking a highly motivated person who embraces diversity equity and inclusion principles to solve complex planning challenges. As a Senior Planner you would lead diverse projects and teams on advanced professional planning work as a subject matter expert. Planning projects could include working on implementing the CountysComprehensive Plan Community Plans code amendment updates related to cottage housing short term rentals affordable housing accessory dwelling units and warehousing joint planning with municipalities and ensuring adequate provision of public infrastructure to accommodate growth. Other related tasks include the review and monitoring of projects to ensure compliance with various rules and regulations plans contracts agency policies and procedures. This position will present information to County Officials departments external entities and the public regarding a wide range of long-range planning topics. As a team member you will work on a wide range of urban resource and rural topics.

All positions require you to work across Department divisions County departments agencies and stakeholders to address topics such as growth management affordable housing environmental impacts capital facilities planning economic development climate change social and health needs and much more. Ideally we want candidates who have a thorough knowledge of subject matterespecially land use and housing and can provide technical assistance to the public communities and professionals regarding their division and projects. Particularly strong candidates will have experience with legislative code writing.
Throughout the training process you will meet with your supervisor regularly to discuss expectations and set goals for yourself as well as introduce you to the current policies and procedures technology/software and the Pierce County Code.

You will have an opportunity to work alongside a diverse and talented team of PPW professionals agencies and community leaders to support planning activities by problem solving and developing innovative solutions to ensure the best services possible for the people of Pierce County. Your work will directly shape how Pierce County communities grow by developing foundational guiding policy documents that guide County programs and plans over time.
Your supervisor will expose you to all department functions and processes and involve you in real time training opportunities alongside more experienced teammates. You will have additional training/educational opportunities through organizations such as the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association Washington State Department of Commerce Services and Puget Sound Regional Council. Your work will directly impact your community and it offers a great foundation for future positions within the PPW Department and Pierce County.
